I upgrade my 2009 Mac Pro Quad Core 2.66, (4,1) video card to the Ati Radeon 5770.
The card worked fine for a few months but recently started making a lot of noise. Now every time the noise begins it stalls my computer for a couple of seconds.

My Mac Pro is at the Apple store right now getting a full diagnosis. The dude at the "Genius Bar" told me there could be compatibility issues.

Ill find out in the next few hours.

Anyone else run into the same problem?

    Thanks!

Depends on what he meant by 'compatibility' issues. As far as I know, the Radeon 5770 works on every Mac Pro from 1,1 to 5,1 and I am unaware of any compatibility issues with the card.

Yes, I can confirm that the 5770 is the problem, I replaced it last week with a brand new 5870 and fan noise is gone.

Not "Officially". But I have never ran into any problems 1,1 to 5,1. Hopefully after testing they will not come back with "This is unsupported so that is why". Sounds like it is just a bad card.

On the Apple site it clearly states:
    "Compatibility:
Requires Mac Pro (Mid 2010) with PCI Express 2.0 slot
Mac OS X v10.6.4 or later"

Which is really ridiculous because ALL 2010 Mac Pro's shipped with this or the upgraded 5870. I know it could be for a 2nd card but, c'mon.

Going to the Apple store may have been the wrong choice for this as your box is now in the system and calling up just for a replacement may be problematic. But my mind wanders and hopefully none of this will happen. You'll just get a replacement card.

Sounds like a bad card not an epidemic. I've installed 8 of them and no one has complained yet.

I bought my card from B&H Photo back in August 2011. Whats the best way to replace it?

I really don't want to waste money on a $450 5870 card since I only use PS and Aperture.

    Any other options!

    Thanks!

Why would you buy a 5870? You have either warranty from Apple, AMD, or possibly B&H. You're covered. What did Apple say about the Mac? Your remaining options hinge on this.

Diagnostic found nothing wrong. They will do a stress test tomorrow on the OS.

Could you verify Flocarino's Expansion Slot issue as well. Do you remember if it was the 5770's fan or the expansion slot on the Mac?

It is already flashed to 5.1 EFI ROM
Problem was the 5770 and it's a common problem. The card is perfect, it is simply NOT 100% compatible with a 2009 Mac Pro. I know it's a PIA to spend $500 on a 5870 but that's the price to pay to have a quiet 2009 Mac Pro.
Why doesn't it says on Apple site that the card is for a 2009 MP, only 2010?

    ----------

It is the Mac Pro's PCI-E slot fan that goes haywire not the 5770 fan(that one is quiet).

Not you dude. The OP needs to verify same issue or it is just speculation on your part. Unless you live with the OP why would you answer for them? And did you verify the card to be "perfect" in another Mac?
So why is it not happening to the non-flashed stock 2009's I put 5770's into if it is so common?

Yes, the card works OK in a MP 1.1, no fan issues.
Look, I don't have time for useless talking, I researched and talked enough with Apple on this matter......ending up with the replacement of the card.

There you go, read some more as I'm not the only one, I tried to help so don't get on my case as I spent enough money/time on this matter:

What does posting a link to a thread where a confused person worries himself into a lather because no audio driver loads on his 5770 have to do with this thread?

Especially as this is 100% normal behavior?

I don't see anything there about fans, just a guy looking for something to raise a fuss about.

I have a 1,1 and a 4,1 (flashed to 5,1) and have never noticed anything weird with a variety of 5770s, both OEM and flashed.

The world has enough problems without people trying to make up imaginary ones.

Obviously you have thrown it down. It is just that I have access to any model Mac Pro I want and have installed 5770's in a variety of them. No issue's. I don't care who you talked with at Apple as I have found most but level 3 technicians to be morons. But you sound starstruck or something.

Thank you, any other complaints at my address? Why bother answering to questions on this forum, when you're taken for a joke :(

    ----------

    That's the point..... IT DOESN'T says 2009 compatible........you're taking chances by buying a 5770 for a 2009 MP.
    That's it!

Running a 5770 on a 4,1 dual quad for the last 8 months. Not issues here.
