Compatible DVDs for Mathita DVD-R UJ-857E

Want to purchase the correct DVD for Matshita DVD-R UJ-857E for backup purposes. Data to backup is larger than 4.7G; I see 8.5G + for sale. I understand the drive is made by Pioneer and DVD-Write -R -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW formats are supported. Apple support says the drive supports ANY DVD format listed for backup. Can I trust this answer? Please point to previous theads if answered before. thx.
