You can still return it, and get your new one. Not a big deal really...Does it suck that it happened, yes. Can it be prevented on your end, yes.

Thing is, the 'casual iPod shopper' doesn't much care if it gets updated and they don't have the latest and greatest.

Most don't but some will. Most people won't bother on price matching if they find something they bought earlier that week on sale in the newspaper... but some always will and stores have price match policies in effect for those people. The poster is within the stated 14-day window so he's welcome to try to upgrade (minus restocking) or get money back on the 30 GB. If he were outside of the 14-day window I'd be saying "suck it up" with the rest of the world but since he's free to return it (for restocking fees) he's completely free to do so without any animosity from me, and should not be receiving grief from anyone.

Should he have waited? Probably, but can you tell me if a stereo receiver at Best Buy is going to go on sale next week? Should I have to suck up a $100 loss because I bought it 3 days ago? I'm within the return window, and it's easier for the store to just issue me the refund than to deal with the now "open box" item.

Hey cmon mate, he made a mistake and was just wondering how he could remedy it...chill. And plus instead of being negative maybe you could have helped to offer a solution like most of the other people here instead of flaming him. Plus, he is not blaming apple for anything, just asking for a bit of help.

You are still within the 14-day apple return period, you can return it for the full purchase price and then go purchase the new ipod.

Take it easy, i'm not flaming anybody, just writing down the facts.

Anyway, tell us how did it end?

This is precisely what I knew was going to happen after the announcement about the iPhone rebates - I knew that people would start wanting rebates for the own recent purchases. People have LONG speculated about whether new iPods were going to come out. If you bought one fairly recently, it's bound to happen. Obsolescence is the price we pay for always wanting Apple to release new and great products.

There is no price protection for old iPods. The new iPods have different specs, it was not a price reduction.

While it's not technically a price protection, apple usually treats it like one. After all, they are still selling the old models until they run out at reduced prices.

So to the original poster, did you get a deal from apple? Did you take it back and swap for a new one? What ended up happening?
