Not quite...

The p4 and Athlon processors inside laptops are Mobile versions. They are not the same ones as used in desktops. They even distinguish between them like so... "Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor-M,". The 'M' being for Mobile aka laptop. AMD has the "AMD® Athlon™ 4", the 4 being the laptop/mobile version of the Athlon processor.

This is information that I though was common knowledge, guess I was mistaken about that.

yes, there is the "M", but there are also full desktop p4s in laptops... check out www.ashtondigital.com among others, and also check out the ads of pentium 4s in pc laptop related magazines...some laptops are being sold as 2.0 and 2.2 ghz systems (for quite a lot of money)

if i had to choose, i would go for the pentium 4 M because it uses less voltage and gets better battery times where a desktop pentium 4 in a laptop burns the battery time up quicker

when i heard of a "desktop pentium 4" being put into pc laptops, i was not that surprised because i had heard of pentium III desktop processors being put into laptops, but with bad battery life

it is a trade-off and i would rather get the pentium 4 M a 1.6 ghz, which is intel's best speed for dollar offering (they do make a more expensive pentium 4 M at 1.7 ghz, too)

The ones that are showing just the p4, I would be willing to bet they really are using the mobile version but are not advertising it as such. Call and find out. From what I understand, the desktop chips produce more heat and require more power then the mobile versions. That is why they have the mobile ones. If the laptop's you sent the link about have a battery life of under 2 hours, then it might be the desktop version, but I doubt it.

i did call them when i first heard about it and i don't know if they still are stubbornly trying to go for speed above 2 ghz in a laptop

but if you have time today, check out any pc laptop mag and you will see two or three ads with desktop p4s in a laptop, but the majority are still p4-m models

i know it sounds weird, but email me when you see a p4 desktop processor in a laptop ad...i know it sounds crazy for manufacturers to use both p4 and p4-m for laptops, but it is being done...and i think it is not too smart

i am definitely more of a p4-m fan instead of a p4 fan for a laptop if i had to choose and if i see an exact link or get another company's ad, i will post it here and email you

but for fun, check it out...it is truly strange;)

Considering that the P4-M maxes out at 1.7GHz (http://www.intel.com/homepage/land/02ww15.htm?iid=Homepage+Feature_Text&), that has to be a desktop P4 stuck in there. Why would people want to burn up their battery life to get a 12% increase in speed? (12% derived from scores on http://www.cpuscorecard.com)

in a word,

ego

ps - but a tibook is a better buy at nearly same price!

i look for features for me, but i like to see how fast the wintel side likes to push their desktops and laptops

i see on the link you gave me, out of a long list of cpu's, the dual 1 ghz g4 ranks at #7

i bet the dual G4 could burn up the pentium 4 in a lot of things most of us here on macrumors like to do...multimedia, photoshop, etc...:D

I always find it funny when PC people want to fight the MHZ fight they always wind up saying that photoshop and video apps don't matter to them, just raw speed performance.
My question then is, if you're not using Photoshop or video apps, why do you need that kind of raw speed?
