I have recently purchased an Apple Watch 4 and I am using the new Infograph face with pedometer++. I have noticed that the complication doesn’t always update by itself.

For example, it is currently still showing yesterday’s steps of 12,915 and hasn’t updated to reflect a new day and today’s useage.

Other times, I note that the complication doesn’t update until I press it. Is this normal?

What I’d love is to see the step numbers increase live, on the complication as I’m walking. Is that possible?

I’ve put the app in the dock and have background refresh enabled on the watch but not in my iPhone - I’ve always had the same setup.

I know some complications, like the weather, are set to update every 30 minutes etc. But with my example above, this isn’t the case for Pedometer++.

Thanks.

I have a similar problem- the stock complication often has dashes instead of a value. When I tap it it spins around for what seems too long then finally looks up the value and populates the complication - same for air quality.

Complication updates are limited by Apple, so unfortunetly they currently can’t live update like that (except for a couple exceptions of Apple only applications, or a counting time display type.) The update rate is about every 10-20 minutes, but Apple can still delay it to conserve battery. In practice delays don’t normally happen though. There is also supposed to be a 50 update per day limit, but I don’t think it is being strictly enforced yet.

Have you contacted the author of Pedometer++? watchOS 5.x caused some breakage of updates for me in Marcher and that may be the case there as well. Also, power cycling the watch my help, but should not be required more than about once a week.

Thanks both.

I don’t mind real-time updates as above, but as per my example, it’s now 5:41pm and I’m still showing yesterday’s steps. So annoying.

I’ve messaged the author of Pedometer++

My pedometer has been flaky too.

I’ve noticed similar problem but with stock complication - Planet Earth. It shows night even if it’s already day (till I change watch face).

So, here’s the reply from the developer, it’s a bit wish washy:

Good to hear you like Pedometer++ and that it has motivated you to walk every day.
We have always hoped that Pedometer++ would have an impact on people's health and lifestyle.

Pedometer++ should update steps roughly every 15 minutes when it is active as a complication on the watch. We are restricted by Apple in how often we can update.
Try switching on "Background App Refresh" in iPhone "Settings", "Pedometer".
As you have discovered, if you tap on the complication then the step count should update and then when you return to the watch face the complication should also have been updated.

Thanks for the update. That doesn’t explain why it’s not working. :-(
