I'm wondering if it's possible to play my Xbox on my MacBook display instead of on the terrible standard definition 13" TV I have at school. Would it be possible to find a component to mini-display adapter? Would this even work? Any help is appreciated.

No.

The minidisplay port (and every other VGA/DVI/DisplayPort) on laptops is video out, not in. They can only transmit video.

Does the fact that the new iMac 27" models also support input from external DisplayPort sources change matters?

As far as I know, to play Wii on a iMac you need to you EYE TV.

I was wondering if that is not the case any more.

Here is solution for you

First you need component to dvi adapter which can be found anywhere for around $10.
And then you need DVI to Mini DisplayPort converter which you can buy
