I have to agree with you, I did prefer my 5s over my 6. I've often wonder if there is a camera quality issue with the six. My photos don't seem as sharp as my 5s.

The amount of detail scrubbing with the 6 was so incredibly overdone. I much preferred the detail level in terms of my 5s, too.

Apple should have improved camera more. Image quality lag behind other competitors' since iPhone 5s.
There are no competitors, only copycats. Android is still a weird hack upon the T-mobile G1 to make it look like an iPhone. Only iOS was conceived as a modern touch-based mobile operating system. You need a sound foundation to be able to add features without harming the system. Android fragmentation is still a problem everywhere.

Awesome article. Each year seems to be minor improvements but when you start comparing the 6s to a 4 or 5 year old iPhone, you can really see those minor improvements add up. Kinda neat!

Can we seriously not agree whether the 6S camera is an improvement or not?
Let the nerds at DXO Labs figure it out... but it's not something I'm concerned with.

iPhone cameras are great. Most flagship smartphone cameras are great. I'm saying "great" because I don't want to say "perfect"

Maybe the word could be "satisfying"

I've had early digital cameras that took terrible photos. But now phones take excellent photos.

Look at the lineup of pencil photos over the years. They kinda leveled off the last few generations starting with the 4S.

There was a big jump between the OG iPhone and 8 generations later with the iPhone 6S

But don't expect much difference between iPhone 6S and iPhone 10S

If Lisa does the "pencil test" in 2023... I don't expect the results to be much different from the iPhone 6S in 2015.

It was from iPhone 4s when Apple switched to Sony lenses and started to use the back illuminated sensor (I think Sony called them Exmor R sensor).
You can see the differences the photos before 4s and after 4s. It's brighter.

Not very defined on either when it comes to strands of hair, skin definition, etc. I have the 6s+ and it does not take the quality of photos my S6e did.
Based on the Verge review, Samsung seems to add a lot more sharpening/clarity in post processing... looks great in a lot of cases (clearly defined subjects with some nice texture), not so great in others (more 'busy' pictures). I really wish Apple would enable RAW export so we could finely tune the pictures ourselves ;)

Funny, seeing the real world results of the 6 vs 6s, may just give the the willpower to resist buying a 6s

The color pencil flow image is very misleading considering it is showing only a close up detailed photo. Granted the progress is staggering from 1 to 6S (this shouldn't be shocking to anybody, hopefully camera technology progressed over the last 8 years), it creates the illusion the first iPhone took blurry, unfocused photos in every setting. This was clearly not the case, if you recall the first keynote Apple spent a good amount of time highlighting the camera quality. They should probably include a few different types of image flows to show the full scale of progress.
Did you bother clicking on the article at all?

I see virtually no difference between 6 and 6s, another person trying to gush about how much "superior" the iPhone 6s is over the last phone and the reality is it just doesn't seem to hold up to the patronizing again. Comparing against older iPhones is moot, nobody is updating from an iPhone 1 to the 6s these days, and everybody knows that the first few generations of iPhone cameras were horrible.

The 6S photoshops clouds right there in your picture for enhanced immersive experience. It truly is magical.

took the same photo with a 6 and 6s+ yesterday and I was shocked at the difference in quality as the 6s+ looked ridiculously better. It really was no contest. I was comparing them on their respective screens so I think that adds to the poorer look for the 6, but still it does feel like a significant jump in quality.

Hah, there's like no noticeable improvement from 6 to 6S at all. I'll sit this generation out then.

My brother was saying this yesterday... why?

I think it was when they switched to sapphire on the lens. Plus their processing was better on 5S especially in low light. The 6 simply "smeared" the detail and colors as it was being to heavy on the noise reduction. It's better on the 6S, but still not as good as the 5S.

Very nice, that image with the pencils is the coolest and really shows the improvements over time. Very nice sweatie....

good comparison..

Sharper in today's phone, clearer, brightness etc, and shows just how far we've come.

We are talking 9 years after all... Personally, i hope i would have had a better connection since dsl came along..

The 5s is by far the best in terms of texture, yes it looks a little noisy compared to the 6 models but it really has skin down so go compared to the rest that are killing me with the digital noise reduction. I noticed when I got the 6 plus really sharp images but when you zoom in it all falls apart. It's very similar to how adobe camera raw handles noise reduction. It's like a painting with leaves or blobs and the textures are all fine with no medium size to be seen. It's sad to see the technique being used as it really doesn't look that great on a big screen.

We've been spoiled in the last few years with the fast progression of the camera. There was a time when you couldn't have dreamed of such a good quality small camera. Even my canon 5d mkii can struggle to get the shot right and you need to go manual to really see the potential advantages over a phone camera. The iphone just works without you needing to interveen or dial in settings which is impressive. The only issue with camera phones is the physical size of the sensor, the small size affects the quality of the photos, you just cant get the depth of field and zoom, lens setups you can with a dslr

the jump between 3G and 3Gs is impressive...
The cameras in the first two iPhone models were really crappy. They were so bad compared to contemporary phones that they were actually ridiculed. Only with the 3GS did Apple start putting effort into the cameras.
