Compressing Movie Files

hey every one, just wanted some advice on
1: compressing movie files
2: what freeware programme would you recommend?
the reason is my memory is runnin thin and the movies i have are .avi,.mov etc... also i have looked into it a bit and swf kept appearing, i'm clueless😱😕
