Did you buy a Rev B (8 DIMM ) 2.0 or a Rev C (4 DIMM) 2.0?????

If comp USA can STILL sell you a back stock NEW IN BOX Rev B ( 8 DIMM ) 2.0 I would take that over a Rev C 2.0 prosumer model any day.

That stock 64 MB VRAM tells me you've got a Rev B.
Does it have 8X SuperDrive or 16X dual layer.

The 8X Superdrive also indicates you've got the Pro machine.

If you still can boot 'er up, I'd check the system profiler.

A Rev B 2.0 is model # VPN-M9455LL/A

I would try to get the store manager to help you find a NEW left over Rev B 2.0

Not that I am a CompUSA fanboi or anything but I bought my iBook at CUSA and I was verry happy. Granted, I bought it off a guy named Jamie who was the on site Apple rep and he was very knowledgeable and helpful. I would not have bought the mac from a red shirt.

The Apple guy at the CompUSA here is really good and I would buy from them anytime, except for the fact that I get an educational discount on Apple's website.

It is a Rev B that someone returned and they deemed "Certified Refurbished."
I can tell because the packaging was sloppy and it was missing a mouse and keyboard and dvi to vga adapter. It's all packaged up and I'm going to the store in 2 hours, but I did check the profiler and its the GeForce with 64MB VRAM, 8 RAM Slots, and 8X SuperDrive.

Edit: They only had 2 of the one I want (Dual 2) and I happened to get the wrong box.. if the other box is a refurb too.. I'll be happy to take it as long as they make sure there are all the peripherals that I'm paying for.

for me, it really depends on the people who you buy from too. i have some of the worst customer service experiences and it's not because of the company.

one of them because of the moronic son-of-a bch who sold me a fake radeon 9800 pro and said "fine, call the cops, or we will get the cops to get rid of YOU". i thought that it was a miracle that i didn't kick him in the crotch so hard that it burshed. next time i see him il spit or sneeze right in his eyes.

some shop owners are very polite and nice, and would replace anything that is not "right", like a broken linksys router, or replace a keyboard for free because of a jamming key. man those guys are the best. not like that loser

If I were you id get a refund.....then wait and see what happens on Wednesday with the rumoured updates.

Mike,

Are you sure you don't want to wait until Wednesday? A lot of us are thinking new Power Macs may be released (announced) on Wednesday.

I don't understand why anyone would make a purhcase now. At least wait till Wednesday. That way you have the benefit of making a more informed decision as well as getting a better deal on discontinued models if you decide to go that way. Hell I would even make a trip over to your closest Apple store on Wednesday to see what they offer on discontinued models.

Additionally, it's highly unlikely that Apple will be raising prices on new models so you may even get a better system for the same amount of money.

FWIW, I bought 1GB (2 x 512 sticks) of Centon RAM from CompUSA, and it's been in my Power Mac for 6 months with absolutely zero problems. That machine has never had a kernel panic, and I use it for heavy duty video and DVD stuff. To be honest, I've never really had a problem with CompUSA. I've only had to return one thing there, and they took it back with no hassle at all. Of course, I've never bought a Mac there...

dude, I bought my iMac from CrapUSA and had a HUGE ordeal. After a letter to the CEO of CrapUSA they made things right but it took a month or so. Don't deal with the store manager, general manager, customer service manager. Write a letter to the CEO. What happens is the guy never sees the letter (of course) but it gets sent to their consumer affairs dept. where in turn they contact the store manager to ask them to resolve the issue.

NEVER BUY from CrapUSA. horrible.

Um, I bought my PowerBook from CompUSA and had no problems whatsoever. Sales staff were easy to deal with, got approved in 5 minutes and was out the door in 10. Never had any problems with anything/one. I even brought my Apple BT mouse back 4 months later with dead batteries and exchanged it for a Mighty Mouse and a $10 CompUSA gift card. :D

Maybe I just got lucky.

It completely varies from store to store depending on who the managers are. Making a blanket statement like that is just childish.

They have a return policy, you can take it back and get your money back if you have problems with it. If you acted like an ass when you were in there, they probably didn't work with you because of your attitude. I don;'t blame them. I can't stand pain in the rear customers either.

I am confused. Doesn't compusa have a 21 day no hassle return policy? The denver store does and I returned my 2.5ghz G5 without even a twitch from them. Besides, I would buy from apple refurbished. Got a dual 2ghz rev b for $1599 from there and I love it. Got applecare off of ebay for $100. Cheapest kickass system around.

Oh and get your ram from OWC. It will work no problem and its cheap.

I made sure that mikemodena was returning to CompUSA
armed to the teeth with information, so hopefully, he'll do well.

I paid $1699 for my Rev B NEW IN BOX direct from Apple
and got the Tiger upgrade CD as well.

He has a few options.

Demand a full refund and wait till Wednesday,
Demand a NEW IN BOX Rev B 2.0 for $1699
or haggle the price on a working floor model 2.3
or threaten action with the BBB.

If he accepts the refurb with all correct contents, then it should cost no more than $1649 including the Tiger upgrade CD.
Hopefully they will offer an extended warranty as a courtesy.

CompUSA has really messed up here selling a USED/REFURB machine as new.

This matter should not be taken lightly.

Not quite. He said it had a yellow sticker on the box saying "Refurbished." He said they gave him $100 and AppleCare for free. Not really. They sold him the machine for $1649 and charged him $249 for AppleCare. Tell him to check his receipt. There's no way he can claim they tried to represent the item as new with that Yellow Sticker on it. Those yellow stickers are not small, I've seen them.

The only line of complaint he has is that parts were missing. He can still get his money back if he wants to. He can also just get the parts from them or get the other refurb model they had.

One thing is for sure. Don't go in "demanding" anything. It may work in some instances, but when I worked in a computer store, those customers that "demanded" anything were only less likely to receive our sympathy or help. If you are calm, understanding, and firm, then the staff will be much more likely to work with you and make sure you are happy.

Update!!!!

They were willing to take it in exchange for a new one but did not have any in stock, so what happened was I kept it (On it right now) and they gave me a keyboard, mighty mouse, a dvi to vga adapter, and $100 back to my mom's card. I'm very happy with it, although I'm having trouble calibrating my display to the way I like it.. I have the calibration file from my mac mini saved but is there any way I can open it in System Preferences? I tried but couldn't find a way.

In other news, I hooked up my mac mini for my mom and gave her a fresh install of OS X, and she fell in love with it.

PowerMac does not equal iMac G5 for RAM compatibility...

Umm? Did I miss something? The OP bought a Power Mac. The other poster in this thread that mentioned Centon RAM was talking about it in relation to a PowerBook. How does the iMac have anything to do with what I said?

Mike,
Glad to hear that CompUSA made good on the sale. Maybe they're not so bad after all. Enjoy your new Power Mac!
