I also have a problem in that I bought this G5 second hand and in the finder bit, under desktop there is a picture of a house and the old owners name. Can I change this to my name?

Go into Accounts in System Preferences and change the user name. I actually haven't tried it. 😛 You can also choose a new picture in the Picture tab.

But I do suggest a clean install of the OS especially if you bought it from a previous owner.

Yep - exactly what Lacero said, especially because even if you change the name, changing the short name isn't exactly straightforward.

Changing the short name might require going into NetInfo Manager or some other really arcane program. You could create a new admin account and delete the old one. (problem is, I've never figured out a way to delete de-activated accounts)

You only need to go into NetInfo to activate the root user (you could also start up off of your install CD/DVD and reset the root users password).

Anyway, as it is a pre-owned Mac, a re-initialise is highly recommended.
