Computer not recognizing display unless I restart

My '17 MBP isn't recognizing my external display after I plug it in unless I restart my mac...also sometimes, when I take it off the external display, it stays as if it is still in external display with multiple screens so I am not seeing applications on one screen again.

Any ideas?

Do it just start for you? I just reset my PRAM, maybe that will help.
