Few more feedback for Edgewiser
So far I have played music via Itune constantly as my Imac is in my kitchen.
My reaction is still the same even after few days later.
This is definitely is a great speakers for music.
To be fair to Z-2300, it is in the $100 price while the best I got for Altec is $158 via Dell, or 58% price increase. For gaming and those who are on budget, there's no shame with Z-2300.
However, like you Edgewiser, I wanted musical speakers that surrounds the environment like a concert hall. Ofcourse you won't get such speaker from a computer as a source, 2.1 system, with cost of less than $200 range but considering these limitations, FX6021 comes pretty close to perfect for my taste (again listening to pop, jazz, and rap primarily).
Another good thing about the FX 6021, as noted above, is the balanced sub. It has enough boom but in balance with the satellites. It may not "explode" like in theaters (which I have true hometheater setup for) but for occasional viewing of DVD, it is actually quite good.
I actually purchased blind (or deaf in this case) but if I heard these speakers in store, I would have purchased them immediately.
As listed on my options, I did consider the 2.0 system but nothing in the store, including Bose, didn't meet my needs. I suspect Swan's M200 may have got me happy based on the review but unlike FX6021, there wasn't much real world experience review from the user, no store that I can test run, support/warranty structure was in question, requires more footprint on the desk, and the cost was about $60 more than FX6021. All of these things
led me to the Altec Lansing.
I will disqualify that just because I'm happy with it, you may not be as I also believe speakers are just like cars and women. Tastes differ significantly from one person to another.
Let me know if I can answer any other specifics regarding FX6021
