I think all these networks are trying to be creative enough where they can still provide some type/form of entertainment given the circumstances that are preventing large audiences. I mean, if they didn’t have these options, then you wouldn’t be seeing these talkshow hosts at all, which I gather they still want to stay ‘active’ with their job doing something. Being dynamic and creative is important moving forward in the entertainment industry.
I never thought I'd be watching a video on MacRumors of Conan O'Brien recording his show from my house telling me to wipe my ass with Willem De Kooning art prints, and yet here we are.

Maybe, but Hollywood is also very iPhone centric in terms of smartphones. Remember all those marketing fails by Samsung and Huawei to get actors to tweet about their phones but those actors ended up tweeting from an iPhone?
It’s strange that none of these dudes that make a living in television can grasp the concept of an external mic. This one is bad, Fallon was worse at home. Come on man! You’re (supposed to be) professionals!
In the studio, they have trained professionals to handle all that for them (they stand still while the professionals wire them up with microphones - and run the corresponding sound board - just the same way they sit in a chair and professionals do their makeup). That doesn't automatically translate to having all the proper equipment readily available at home. It would be good, of course, for the studios involved to ship them some useful gear (good microphones and camera/phone mounts/stands, maybe a few lighting panels).
Skype has specific integrations and hardware that allow it to be used for broadcast purposes.

Facetime is strictly locked down to Apple devices. This is a case where Skype was smart enough to realize the free advertising they'd get if they invested a little into a specific professional niche product. They out-Appled Apple on this one.
Any broadcast engineer worth his salt can integrate a Facetime conversation, even if it is a simple as a iOS or Mac device HDMI to a realtime capture card. I doubt their guests are going to have a hard time coming up with an iOS device. Fallon and David Spade have been doing it from the beginning of their shows.
Even if they were going to use an different underlying product, my point was that if Apple was paying to have the iPhone promoted they would insist on calling it facetime.
