Virgin supply my broadband, so I'm used to GPRS speeds every evening and weekend.

^^ FTW!!

i'm glad im not the only one who thinks it's suddenly gone down.

I hear a lot of people complaining about VirginMedia speeds, so there must be some problem… but my speeds are pretty good.
Just tested and I got 15502kbps down and 720kbps up… a bit slower than during the mornings… but still not that bad. :D

I've got the inside track from some o2 chaps and basically edge is to be expanded to 90% of the uk inside 3 months!!! So don't worry...It isn't going to be like it is forever!

If thats the case, why aren't o2 singing it from the roof tops? Surely they would want people to know about it and it would stop all this uncertainty?!?

It's a software rollout over the GPRS network (not like a 3G HSDPA deployment which requires masts/equipment addition). Maybe they don't want to shout about it just in case there are incompatbility issues with some hardware?

Look at the link I posted above. There's a lot of work listed in there.

I'd like to see a proper map though really but I guess we'll see one when the deployment has happened.

I've already read it....it was that thread that prompted me to start this one....my area is not on there the nearest place i can see thats been/being upgraded is 20 miles away

I really really want an iphone but the trouble is I really really want it for its mobile internet mail capability and if I can't get that at a reasonable speed I have to ask the question what exactly am i paying £35 a month for!!

Indeed. I guess all you can do is wait then....or use GPRS and trust EDGE is coming and use The Cloud where available.

You seen the Cloud coverage? They have them in BT payphones in some places!

I posted the EDGE link for general info btw. I think some people reading this thread won't have read it.

Just for reference, (i'm sure most peopel know this already) but I used to work for Leisure Link, a very large nationwide fruit machine (leisure) company.

They provide a piece of kit called an 'Itbox' - touchscreen SWP - ugly bloody thing which is in a hell of a lot of pubs, etc.

This is what delivers the cloud - there is literally a dirt chear ADSL router in the thing, connected to the internal windows based PC. So, Where ever you see one of these machines, you're virtually guaranteed wifi, unless someone has pulled the phone socket out of the wall :D

I hadn't read it, and I am very excited by it. I was told that Scotland would be the last place to get EDGE. There are lots of Glasgow areas and even Edinburgh in that list already. Excellent news.

Well this morning on my way to work was the first proper O2 Edge connection I've ever managed to get on my Nokia E65. Occasionally had it connect to Edge for a few seconds and then flick back to 3G or GPRS but that's all.

Download speeds didn't seem a whole lot different to the 3G speeds I've come to expect from O2. Tried webmail, Macrumors and a couple of other bookmarks.

Not saying that's a good thing but if it's not much worse than O2s general 3G speeds, then I can live with it.

I think it'll be fine. My opinion is having EDGE on the iPhone browser will probably be quicker than using HSDPA or 3G on a browser on another phone, because of the quality of the browser itself. Whilst I agree the N95 browser is quite good it's not the quickest to navigate or use.

We'll see tomorrow - can't believe it's nearly out!

Not much slower than o2 3g? Blimey! Im finding edge not much faster than gprs (on nokia 6300 - i cant wait to benchmark it on the iPhone)

I forced my Nokia to use GPRS only and when using GPRS is it is A LOT slower than the 3G speeds but when it connected via EDGE this morning it was great.

Well... I should say loading webmail and Macrumors wasn't noticeably slower. Maybe I got lucky.

i discovered EDGE in my area last night. Gothome and there was the E! then it went away again. Anyway, I woke up this morning, and there it was again! only to disappear again.

There has definately been a rollout. I hope it gets more consistent.

Amazingly there is very little Edge coverage in Sheffield. You know the UKs 4th biggest city. GPRS is painfully slow.

GPRS is pretty darn slow, although at least the rendering speed of Safari on the iPhone would be a big help.

I have 3G on my Nokia n73 and it *crawls* in comparison to EDGE on my dad's iPhone. If there are any images on the page, I dare say it's probably slower than GPRS. Just shows what a difference the browser makes.

I'm using a 1.1.2 uk iphone and i can guarantee edge does work with o2 payg.

I am getting 50kbps when not in a edge area and highest i had is 219kbps in an edge area. I live in stoke on trent so it might differ area to area but just thought id let people know that the internet is useable even in gprs , but when your in an edge area its fantastic , and wifi is very good too.
