Just because I plan to draw pretty heavily and I love a pristine screen, I picked up a Skinomi tempered glass protector. Just installed it this morning in the bathroom after a shower (because steam getting dust out of the air is your friend) :)

It feels great and I have no loss of pressure sensitivity. It does add to the "slickness" of the Pencil on glass, but I actually like the gliding feel a little better that way. We'll see how it fares. It was $16 on Amazon -- no bubbles, super easy install (again, hot shower in closed bathroom, then apply). Now I can press a LOT harder and not worry about damaging my screen.

I've still got AppleCare+ but I really like my gadgets scratch-free. I'm interested to see heavy use cases over the next six months -- I'm not sure exactly when the tip will need replacing or how to tell.

It's really quite simple, but one does need to be knowledgeable and pay close attention to Apple. Clever, masters of concealment, quick to go silent, only speaking on an issue if it becomes a major issue that draws national attention do they surface to perform damage control.
One needs to be knowledgeable and place close attention to attempts at concealment?

Yes, I think so. For example, when I asked you for examples, you refued to give any, but attempted to conceal that fact through a prevaricating string of nonsense.

A long time Apple enthusiast that has had the pleasure of using many of their new computers prior to the iToys days, they largely did their best work until they became so successful they could roll back on due diligence to focus on the fine art of increasing profits while driving mass production numbers into the stratosphere.

Still waiting for an example...

I do give them credit for maintaining a certain degree of quality, even if not their best, given the break neck speed at which the Chinese workers toil to meet Apples demands. It's a sub humane task that could only be achieved under the intimidation metered out at the manufacturing plants.
And, no examples. Got it.

Though you could have just said, "I have no examples." Would have saved a lot of time.

there is one solution to this that would please us all..

make the screen so it doesn't leave a mark.. finger, smudge, or pen.
But where is Apple supposed to get dragon scale and unicorn powder in sufficient quantities for a major product like the iPad Pro?

He's a troll just ignore him.

Reinforcing what others have said, gorilla glass is very hard and the plastic nib is very soft so this is not a problem. However, dust commonly contains bits of Quartz or sometimes even corundum which are very hard. If you keep everything clean there should be no problems. If you intend to use this outdoors or at a construction site or the beach then get a screen protector.
