Confirmation of Fixed 17" MacBook Pro Battery, Mac Mini with Firewire

nVidia 9400M?
FireWire 800?
A fifth USB 2.0 port?
mini-DVI and mini DisplayPort with possible dual display support?

Sounds like the opposite of what Apple would do...

Make it support a minimum of 4GB RAM, SuperDrive standard and replace the 2.5" hard drive with a 3.5" one and we'll recommend the new Mac mini to all potential switchers!

Seriously, what would be left to complain about after all that (except the price)? ;)

If this Silver-Zinc battery lives up to all its claims, then I would support a fixed battery. (The biggest claim being that it doesnt begin to degrade in performance for 5 years!) The only question then becomes: why cant we have this new battery tech in a top-of-the-line 15"?

Pardon my ignorance but what is so evil about a non removable battery? I mean, the worst thing I could imagine is that you put your battery through so many cycles that you'd need to have Apple install a new battery which I doubt would run more than $100-$150 or so. Based on the cost of the 17" MBP, I can't see what the huge fuss is about?

Great news!
Fixed battery for better life and presumably giving Apple more chance of making the 17" even thinner!
About the not being able to replace your own battery.... come on. If you have an issue with your battery just drop it @ your local Apple Store or dealer, they replace it in a few minutes.
If this decision gives you 50% more life, you'll love a fixed battery!

Mac mini with FireWire 800! :)
I'm ordering one...

Can't wait!

Guess my ********* call on the battery was wrong. I stand corrected. I don't even know why I got so pissed off, I'm not gonna buy a 17"MBP or any notebook with a 17" screen.

You guys get upset and then I jump on the wagon lol. Oh well. If this battery idea is for the greater good , then i'm for it. If you guys still don't like it after its announced, then i'm with ya.

A Fixed battery on a 17-inch supposedly "prosumer" laptop? So I now have to ship my entire laptop in for a battery replacement. That sounds much easier and hazard free than just shipping the replacement battery.

And yes, not everybody is near a local Apple store or dealer. The nearest apple service shop to me is 45+ minutes away.

Isn't the panel on the 13" and 15" laptops also how you access the RAM and hard drive for changing those? I can't see these not being user-changeable either. I think the battery will be removable. That's my vote.

People love to complain about the non-removable battery, but most laptop owners I know have only a single one (and I'm not talking only casual users). Certainly if something goes wrong with the battery and it needs to be replaced this could be problematic, but you will be able to take it into any Apple Authorized Repair Center and have it swapped for a working one.

While everyone is rambling about the usage of zinc-silver batteries in new MBP's there is one major disadvantage on the "Green Apple" side - they contain Mercury, therefor it would make no sense whatsoever to include such technology in that aspect.
There would have to be a major send in and recycle program for the sole purpose of using them. Oh well, time will tell - and not so much of it left till the Philnote.
I for one wouldn't mind some new tech in there even if it means it would be a non-user-replaceable battery - but that comes from a perfectly happy user of a 15" non bling-bling MBP display and would not trade it in for a unibody 15". Hope the 17" meets my expectations, hopes and dreams.

Ooh mac mini sounds a nice up-to-date supplement to my powerbook that still works fine :). Not desperately in need of a new machine but could be enticed if the price is right....

Who are you?

Well, Tuesday should be interesting. I was always thinking about getting a mini. But with the rumored monitor ports, not so sure. Really want to drive a 30". With reviews for the dual-link adapter I think I will wait till they work better. But the new 17" MBP looks interesting.

Firewire 800 = awesome. That means it'll be able to daisy chain!
I really see no reason why they didn't put them on the new macbooks.

I'd be cool if they use a new battery technology... I hope that won't drive up the price (not that i'm going to be able to afford a 17" mbp... ever!)

I don't really see how portable a 17" notebook is. It seems more like something someone would use in Starbucks, or somewhere else where there is an easily accessible power outlet.

I keep hearing this, but I have a SR 17" MBP that has travelled all over the world with me. The weight isn't/wasn't that much different than its 15" equal at the time. It is also the only way to get 1920x1200 resolution (which is something that stinks and an option Apple should add for the 15" screens).

Count yourself lucky. It's 3 hours and 15 minutes for me (probably a lot longer considering the traffic and weather). Double that to come back home, making it a day-long trip and probably over 50$ in gas and 20$ in meals.

More probably, the battery won't be "user accessible" since you'll need to unscrew the bottom panel to access it or something.

As far as the battery replacement goes, you do know there are millions in just the US that are not near an Apple Store? Not to forget the rest of the world also! One would think they may not be to thrilled to mail/ship there laptop back to Apple?

As far as the Mini goes.... I do hope these rumors are accurate and then put me down for 2 of them!--))) ;)

I've never had any problems with my battery. I could care less if it's fixed or not. Maybe they are making it fixed since the new batteries may have something it them that is toxic and they want to be able to service them so that they can properly recycle them...???

i think that if they introduce a non removable battery it's beacuse the battery life will be very long.. i hope 3 or 5 years...
apple is always innovation.. and these could be the first notebooks that won't change battery for the entire lifetime..

Phil's gonna have tons of explaining to do if this is the case haha.

Soon we will know everything. Looking forward to reading the MR Rumor Roundup!

If you use your portable in the field or away from an outlet you would normally have a second battery at hand. This 'upgrade' removes that option for you and now you either buy an old-school 15" with a couple of batteries or you live with no second or even third battery. It seems silly to me that your most power-hungry portable will have no user replaceable battery - but Apple is known for doing said things for form over function.

If apple could manage this they wouldn't need to bother making computers anymore :D!

I've had a couple of times where my Ibook froze on the 'screensaver password' on wake 'page', and closing/opening the lid had no effect, nor the power button.

In such a situation, I'd hate to be the owner of a laptop to which you couldn't kill the power supply from both plug and battery.

But, MBA owners already suffer from this, is there a kill all power button?
