Sapphire Crystal is used on all high end luxury watches. (ex. Rolex, Breitling, Omega etc.) It is an extremely scratch resistant material that can only be scratched by something harder than it, which I believe is only diamond.
True... for the real sapphire. "Apple sapphire", not so much ;)

The spec sheet used to include whether the watch had an ion x or sapphire display.

I wouldn’t necessarily call people idiots for wanting to confirm which screen their watch includes.

You might call them idiots for not looking at the specs though ;)

Aluminum models have Ion-X glass displays. Stainless steel and titanium models have sapphire crystal displays.

Not true at all. Sapphire is more scratch resistant. When it comes to shattering your screen, ion-x is more durable.

That's not my direct experience with a mixture of aluminium (Ion-X glass) and stainless steel (sapphire crystal) models over the years.

The display on the stainless steel/sapphire crystal watch has been much more durable, no chips, scratches, or shattering in 4+ years of use. The displays on the aluminium/Ion-X glass watches have been scratched, cracked and chipped (and in much less time).

Sapphire glass is harder but more brittle. Ion-X glass is softer but can tolerate a bit of flex.

Think cinderblock versus wood. Easier to gouge wood with your fingernail than gouge a cinderblock, but a hammer to a cinderblock will shatter the thing while wood will resist more.

Unfortunate in your case you managed to crack the ion-x watch, but that was just your bad luck.

I don't think it makes someone an idiot to want to make sure that when they are spending $700+ they are getting what they expect. I'm fairly confident it used to be included in the specs. Removing that from the specs will of course cause people to question whether or not it's included.

Apple leaves many thing out of the specs. But that kind of a change would have been stated clearly.

Here it says ion-x for the more expensive watches.

What site is that, apple?
