Retina MBP should be called MacBook Air advanced

Regardless of the projected direction of technology, the fact is that without built in Ethernet, FireWire, or OD the retina models remove lots of functionality that professionals rely on. Not every office has wifi, nor do they want it, this makes traveling with a thunderbolt to ethernet adapter essential. You can forget about enjoying Netflix expanded DVD library as there is no optical media support and if you have FireWire hardware that will also need to be replaced.

It's like when I got a new mini and discovered that it wouldn't work with my KVM switch because of the two display interfaces on the mac mini one thunderbolt was being used to attach RAID storage and HDMI to VGA doesn't work.

Apple is constantly ruining my day with ill conceived 'upgrades' I miss Steve

Because surely all professionals have exactly the same needs, regardless of their profession? Right.

Not all people who work professionally with a laptop need to access several different office networks or need to use Netflix expanded DVD library (Is that really a professional use case too? Huh. Would't have quessed. Brings in mind the complaints, that the rMBP will run Photoshop, Lightroom, Aperture, Final Cut, or whatever you throw at it just fine, but man, that sluggish Facebook scrolling certainly hinders productivity. Are people now professional Facebook scrollers, or what is that about?)

So, yes, there propably ARE many professional users who need this and that, and they will get a computer that best suits their needs. I don't really get this whining about one specific laptop model not being suitable for every possible scenario, as there are alternatives availaboe that will fill the bill where the rMBP doesn't. So if a certain laptop model is not suitable for your professional needs, then don't get one, get something else. Simple.

Apple has gone full retard.

Do you have one of those new corning fiber to thunderbolt networks that are slated to come out sometime this year? In my estimation they are about 3-5 years away from widespread adoption, just in time for your glued in battery to die.

The Retina models are not pro models and should be given a different name. Maybe it needs a catch phrase. How about... "Me and three dingle berries equal a Macbook Pro"

It sows confusion to purchasing agents who think they are doing the right thing when ordering the latest hardware only to find that equipment which has been industry standard has been removed and now new equipment is incompatible with old, without major versioning indicators, another standard of the industry which has been ignored.

Hackintoshes are becoming better and better options. Since the adoption of the Intel architecture they are much easier to build! If I was spending my own money, that is the route I would go, but since my company was buying I got the 10th gen MacBook Pro.

This latest model harkens to the Macs of the 1980's when they were losing market share to PC's and SJ was building Next.

What I hate are Apple store employees trying to up-sell me on hardware that can't accomplish what I need it to. "well sir you can just get an external optical drive for that, oh and an external ethernet to thunderbolt adapter, oh and I think Belkin is coming out with a thunderbolt hub but we don't stock that. The Retina is sooo much thinner and ligher, if you don't count that wheelbarrel of accessories needed to make it as versatile as the non retina models.

How often do you use "All my Files". Do you click there and then rummage through everything or do you use a classic hierarchical system? Cause it seems like Apple has gone full retard.

To the thread starter. I am from India too and have asked my reseller to get me the top of the line rMBP (2.7, 512, 16GB). How much are you paying for it? I am quoted 166k for it after a lot of haggling. My cMBP was damaged beyond repair and this will replace that unit.

And here we go again. 'All professional needs are the same, all professionals need huge amounts of diskspace in racks, otherwise they are not professionals. Someone who needs just a laptop to do their job is not a professional, and neither is their equipment.'

You are basically saying, that only corporate employees and their equipment can be called professional. And that's a completely silly argument.

How much is the Apple Care costing you? Are you opting for the 3 year plan?

Its for 21,xxx yes i will be going in for it later on as i need to buy some studio monitors for my self. But anyways that amount of money for the plan would be so less in case an issue occurs after a year. Before it expires ill sell it and buy a new macbook :D. I got an insurance as well 999 bucks covers theft accidental and water damage.
