I was looking on Apples site about using remote disk to play CDs on a macbook air and it was talking about needing to install the remote disk software from the OS disk.

Wouldn't the "CD/DVD Sharing" option in the preferences panel take care of that?

Remote Disk is used exclusively for running the installer. You're right, when you're actually using the computer normally, you'd use sharing.

I think that the need to install the software separately is from a while back. I think it's included in the OS now.

I was trying to figure out if the CD/DVD sharing that is in my preferences panel was what I needed to run a dvd on a macbook air.

Apples site talked about needing to install software from the OS install disk but that is for older machines since Snow Leopard has a CD/DVD sharing option already.
