Confused about which output to use for LG 4K UltraFine

I think the 4K display is not compatible with older macs with thunderbolt 2 ports. It only works with macs with USB-C (i.e. MacBook 2015, 2016) or Thunderbolt 3 ports (like the latest macbook pros)

the 5k is compatible with older machines, with adapters, but not at full 5K resolution.

Well, I think Apple chose to support the retina macbook also, which only has USB-C.

Thank you! I do plan to use the LG display with my 2016 12" MacBook. Was hoping I could have it do double duties with my 2013 MBP.
