Perhaps don't use Chrome, which is a notorious RAM hog, and instead use Safari for this specific exam and its software? Either that or use a different computer which has more RAM? Can you borrow one from a friend or relative?
This. Chrome and Brave browsers are known resource hogs

give Firefox a try. but it seems to be the proctor software/+website.

I'm going to assume the software recognizes and monitors the ram usage and doesn't recognize M1 uses swap memory and its own ram management system that is ok to run at full capacity and use swap.

like others have suggested, try to see if your dad will let you borrow his 16gb machine for your test, so you won't have to worry about anything else but the test.

Good luck

If it were me I would try this:
  • Disable all other Chrome extensions than ProctorU
  • Clear Chrome's cache
  • Reboot
  • Make sure all programs in the Dock are closed (Finder should be the only icon with a dot under it)
  • Launch Chrome and try again
If that doesn't work, try it with Firefox. If THAT doesn't work, use another computer. My guess is that some of the software you're running, possibly the ProctorU extension itself, isn't optimized for M1.
I'll try this, I do have Metamask/Anchor running as chrome extensions as well. Testing it all out right now.

This sounds incredibly frustrating. I wish you the best of luck figuring everything out. I can't imagine the extra stress this is creating right before taking the LSAT.
I appreciate it! I honestly think my interruption last time took a few points off of my test, just left me extremely flustered. I want to iron this out before I start on Saturday because I really would not like to take this test again!

Ugh looks like you also have Adobe and DropBox Bloatware running (both of which are worse on M1). Both of these cause issues with memory as you can see from the Activity Monitor screenshot.

From a fresh restart you will be better off, and when you restart make sure you that do not click the option to reopen windows and apps. Also make sure that no other users are logged in.

The extension is probably poorly programmed and would work fine without but you are better off using your dad's computer with 16GB if he allows access. Just do the same steps with the reboot.
I did notice all of the Adobe tasks running, I hate that these tasks plague the computer 24/7. I don't even really use many Adobe products often, I just downloaded them to take advantage since my school offers them for free currently. Going to try to do a deep dive and kill all of these tasks before my test starts. Going to have my work cut out for me before the 8:40 A.M. start time haha

Thank you! He's on board to let me borrow it (doesn't do much before around 4 P.M. on Saturdays anyway haha)

Off topic but my memory leak problems only started with 12.1. After a few hours multiple background tasks are using 100’s of MBs. I force kill them and I’m good for another 12 hours.
Huh, not seeing that. But I don't really care about a few hundred meg of RAM mostly. 12.01 though, could let a process consume all of your RAM, which would give the OP's error.

Trying your dad’s machine seems sensible. I’d be surprised if performance matters as much as just raw memory availability— but then I’m surprised that something like a browser extension for test taking is causing memory problems that applications like Final Cut don’t seem to.

Another difference with the older 16” MBP may be fan noise, so make sure you’re ok with it or can do something to minimize it.

You might also consider creating a dedicated account on whatever machine you use for the test and only setup the services you need for the test. I do this sometimes when I’m presenting live from my machine to ensure I don’t have other stuff running that I don’t need. You probably want to set it up as an admin account so you don’t get hit by unexpected permissions problems.

I’d say the priority here is just to find a solution that doesn’t leave you worrying about things going wrong when you have enough other things to worry about. If it were me, I’d also practice what to do when the system crashes so I don‘t need to improvise at game time.

What version of macOS? There was a memory leak in 12.01 that seems fixed in 12.1

I thought it was just Monterey but it also happened on Big Sur. Used up almost all 16GB without anything running.

My M1 8gb ram machine also runs ~2gb *free* memory/ram.

If I have nothing running, fresh restart/shutdown-powerOn the system will be using ~5-6gb+ ram which I thought was extremely high, but I never run into "memory pressure" yellow or red.

Activity monitor shows that I have used Swap memory only <30mb and I've never gone above 50mb swap memory, even in my most intensive usage.

I'm thinking macOS for M1 lets its apps expand-and-shrink as necessary, probably ML (machine learning) adjusting to the owners App running/launching routine and keeping the system very snappy IMO.

You care when it is more than a dozen processes. I have a 16 GB machine and when idle it’ll start swapping multiple GBs. Never had a problem with Big Sur or 12.0.

You aren’t looking at processes not owned by you. Switch to All Processes to get a better picture of what is using memory.

I recently used chrome off-charger and it used up considerably more battery than safari for those who are curious.

With safari I get around 8-10% battery discharge per hour.

With chrome I get around 15-18% battery discharge per hour.
