That's cool I will await to see what happens when u get it.

I do want some storage option for my music files. Rather not use my ssd if i can avoid it.

And i can just get a super drive for my cd needs as i think i use the disc drive once in a blu moon.

Why did u go with the ocz over e corsair?

Are the SSD drives Plug and Play or do they require any special adapters or drivers?

Plug and Play. They use the same S-ATA connector as HDDs.

Any of the Sandforce SSDs are what you want (OWC, OCZ, Patriot, etc., they are all the same).

Modestly priced and stupid-fast.

Been using the OWC brand of SSD, given all the positive reviews as well as being a Mac focused retailer. I'll never go back to a platter based drive again.

Well the optibay finally came in and it was that one from the picture with the plastic edge. I've heard a lot of people say they had to take this off with a hacksaw so i was a bit worried but it fitted perfectly. I watched a video on youtube and they showed you actually only had to unclip two things, not all the extra bits if you fiddle with a screwdriver. It was actually really really easy. The only thing that wasn't mentioned is that initially it looks like there are no screw holes on the optibay to match up with the mac but you have to take the small metal mounting bracket off the superdrive and mount that on the optibay first.

Overall, took about 15mins and now i've got a 500gb internal drive for all my music and videos. I haven't noticed much of a battery hit but i have noticed how much quieter my ssd is. I hear about the hdd every time it spins up but maybe in a years time, i'll be able to get a cheap <250gb ssd to replace it with.

wow thanks for that paddy have you got the link to the drive u have again as I have lost it lol :( I swear I am not not mentally prepaired enough for the world

I was conflicted about which SSD to purchase as well. Then one night I was shopping and saw Best Buy had the Intel SSD's, so I made an impulse purchase. Even though it does not benchmark as high as the Sandforce based SSD's I'm quite happy with the purchase. With that being said, I think the OP made a good choice with OCZ Vertex 2 because they are one of the fastest. It's just a damn shame that none of the companies, including OWC, offers proper support for the Mac platform. I want to buy another SSD that's faster and has more capacity than my Intel but I will not until companies supply the tools necessary to maintain and update the drive.
