I'm also not sure about Ping in general. There's soooooo much potential here, but there's a lot that needs to be done. I'm surprised there's no way to quickly scan your iTunes library or pick favorite artists (more than just the 10), in order to build up a music "profile." I would love if it they took some great ideas from Last.fm, like showing musical "compatibility" and whatnot.

I agree. I don't really give a crap about that old Nine Inch Nails album I bought in high school, yet "Genius" loved suggesting crap based on it. You'd think Apple would actually use the metadata that's in iTunes -- you know, the "last played," "most frequently played," "star ratings," and all that -- in order to inform its decision. Wouldn't my friends rather read about my 5-star songs? Assuming I have friends that have all of their music digitalized and in iTunes, of course.

Ping - now 100% more useless.

It did work for me, I only got one result because I tried it right away and only one other FB friend had also tried it right away. Steve, if you think I'm gonna email people asking them to join me on Ping, you're nutso.

Facebook and Twitter are a reality and I doubt you really need a "deal" with them, just use the APIs they have available and if they change the terms on you, then remove Facebook compatibility later. By then we will have connected with our friends anyway and it won't matter.

Especially since most people will only want to connect with friends that they know have similar music tastes. My cousin loves terrible music but is on a Mac; why would I want to confirm her terrible music taste by seeing her favorites? The 4 or 5 friends I have that are into interesting music, well, we already talk about favorite albums or new finds.

I read that this is less social networking and more social shopping. I think that's apt.

I probably have 1/10 (if that) of my Facebook friend's email addresses in my address book. I'd wager that I am not alone with this statistic!

Once again we have people who have never used or tried Apple's ping and are saying crap...lets give apple a few days to get ping straight...remember this is not facebook or twitter its Ping...its different. we all know everybody uses itunes so Ping will get some use. Facebook integration will come soon.

Good point Eggy. Thanks. My only real counter-point is that it is a lot of manual work to connect with the people that I *might* want to shop socially with without easy Twitter/FB integration. And I'm a geek. My friends who might be interested in following my history are not and will likely never type my name in Ping search.

Nope, why would I want to see what someone with the same musical taste is listening to - I want to discover new and different music and artists - i'm glad to see my taste in music differs from my friends - how boring would it be if we all listened to exactly the same stuff? Recommend new artists to each other, expand my musical horizons...

Oh yeah, I totally believe that. Anything to help them make more money. And if Facebook wanted some kind of deal that involved money, Apple probably said "Forget it." It's now just a gimmick. I told my wife about it yesterday because I was excited about it; (anything that involves music and possibly discovering new bands is exciting for me.) She immediately said it was just another way for Apple to make money. Now that I've actually tried it, I agree.

It did have a lot of potential with Facebook connect.

Last I checked Apple was neither a charity nor a non-profit, why does the desire to make money come as a surprise. Honestly.

why can't we all just get along. but then again, how many itunes users are there compared to facebook?

Me too; that's why I want to connect to people who are into music but have unique tastes. Those people who are already my friends, well, we already talk about that stuff. The friends that just listen to whatever is on the radio, I don't really care what they're listening to.

What upset me the most about the Genius recommendations in the past was that it was limited to whatever was on iTunes. At least Amazon will suggest CDs. Ping isn't a way to explore new music, but just a way to shop via your friend's iTunes.

Next day Steve woke up and it struck him: "What am I doing? Why am I letting my sheep out my walled garden?" And BOOM, he pulled them all back!

I saw it when I first downloaded iTunes 10, but hwen I tried the Facebook thing, nothing happened. I wanted to share with all my Facebook peeps that I was on iTunes Ping. This sucks.

Bing?! Ping?

Whatever it's called, without a social network backend to invite friends to, it's absolutely useless. I'm a typical earlier adopter to these types of things and this just feels like an empty shell without friends. Assuming users will manually invite one another via email is ridiculous.

Oh well...

Zune social!

I have to bring it up. Zune has already done this. The social aspect of Zune is pretty good. I wish MS could/would make a Zune app for iPhone. I would love to have access to a zune pass on my phone. Either that or Apple needs to get there ***** together and offer subscription service and a better recommendation engine. I have never been introduced to more great music than when I had a zune pass.

i cant wait till Facebook dies like myspace.

AMEN!

No offense to the droves of FB fanboys and fangirls, but am I the only person on the planet that doesn't give a rat's ass what my friends are doing every second of the day? I mean, I get the whole "keeping in touch" thing, but an occasional text, email, call or, dare I say, a face-to-face visit (if they live close by) is more than enough for me.

I'll admit that I have a FB account, but the luster wore off about a month after I set it up, and if I check it more than a couple times per month nowadays, that's a lot for me.

Maybe I'm in the extreme minority, but the fact that iTunes doesn't have FB connectivity is actually a good thing in my book.

What's this facebook thing that everyone keeps talking about?
And before you tell me to google it, you should tell me what that is as well.
