I have no idea what these ports are for, but i need to connect a 2010 13' Macbook pro to the class's overhead projector for a presentation. Can someone guide me to what adapter i need? I have provided the pics of the laptop as well as the cable that connects for the overhead projector

You need a MiniDisplay Port to VGA adapter. It goes into the port marked like this: |O|
You can get it at Radio Shack or the Apple Store for about $29.

What's weird is the "VGA" connector you are showing is reversed. Inputs are always female meaning the pins insert into the device. Notice in the adapter pics how the VGA side is female as opposed to male in your original pic. Maybe you took a pic of the output at the projector but just a heads up as you will need a male to make VGA connector to go from the adapter to the projector.

Yeah, it's not a gla..., ahem, classy interface, but it is still prevalent around planet Earth.
