Okay so my dad has just bought a new 16" MBP to upgrade from his 2010 17" MBP. Aside from his files like Word documents, photos or music I don't think really any of his apps will work on the new Mac OS. I think he is running Mavericks on the 2010 MBP. Is it possible to connect the two macs together via USB and just transfer the files or folders over? Or do I need to buy an external drive to do it? My dad does not have any external backup drive.

If it was a 2011 you could use a ThunderBolt 2 to 3 adapter, plus a ThunderBolt 2 cable

You could setup file sharing via preferences
this should allow you to do pretty much what you want over Wi-Fi without connecting an external drive.
Migration assistant could be another option but I haven't tried it lately.

I might suggest ethernet cables if you have one handy for the 17" going into the router and the new 16" connected wirelessly
or both connected at gigabit ethernet-->USB-C

Set it all up, test and do a transfer overnight. Hopefully that should work.
Goodluck!

Do you have a USB flash drive around?
128gb or even 64gb?

If he doesn't have that much to transfer, use the flash drive to move it over a little at a time.

This really depends on HOW MUCH (in terms of gb) he has "to be moved".

I have the two Macs connected via a USB cable. However it seems they are just connecting to each other over wi-fi which I think it a reason why it's taking so long to do the transfer. The progress bar is not moving at all.

So I cancelled the migration assistant and now the new Mac will not start up to the login screen. I only get the black screen with the Apple logo and white progress bar. It just goes through that screen over and over again.
