Connect to DFU iPod through a program

Out of curiosity, how do applications such as redsn0w, pwnage, blackra1n, etc. connect to an iPhone in DFU? Is there some way to connect to USB through objective -C? Any advice is greatly appreciated!
 
I understand not many people know this, but can anybody at least lead me into the right direction?
