Connecting 21 inch widescreen to powerbook

I want to connect a Gateway FPD2185W monitor to my 12 inch 1.33 ghz Powerbook. I will be able to do it when my mini-DVI to DVI cable comes in the mail. What I want to know is if I have to connect a keyboard to use the both the intigrated screen on my powerbook and the Gateway lcd if I only want to use the intigrated keyboard on my powerbook. I will attach a mouse, but I want to use dual screen so I have no reason to close the powerbook to run the monitor. Anyone know about this or can test it out?

it should be fine either with a mouse/keyboard that are external or the ones on the powerbook.
