Connecting a DVI 27" Apple display into thunderbolt

I was not aware you can mount a non-thunderbolt Apple Cinema 27" display into my MBP-r's thunderbolt connection. I assumed you needed a thunderbolt to dvi adaptor. But it works without one. Am I missing something?
