do yourself a favor. call brother tech support. they will walk you through it in a couple of minutes. next to apple they are the best tech support. we have three brother printers on our home wifi network. brother had us up and running in five minutes. its really easy. btw, there is no need to connect usb etc. just go into printer pref as long as you are on line and the printer will be discovered and just select it. easy peasy. we also have our iPads connected to it plus an hp laptop.

One final exasperating thought.

There is an ethernet connection on the rear of the Brother printer; there are unused ethernet connections on my Actiontec modem/router.

Is there not SOME way to connect the printer directly to the Actiontec and thus have all three computers on the LAN, connected by that Actiontec, see the primer and print?

Thanks,

OK. I'll see if I can't find a number for them (you wouldn't have one to hand would you?) and call them.

Thanks for that suggestion. When all the solutions on their solutions pages ended with the caveat that they can read your comments but they won't reply, I figured no sense in trying to call.

Again, thanks.

Connect one of the computers to the Brother using a USB cable. Does it work? Can you print to it?

Connect the Brother to your LAN using an ethernet cable? Does it show up in the DHCP list? Can you see it on the network? Can you print to it?

If the above are yes, then you should be able to reconfigure the Wireless in it again per the instructions.

With my Mac, the once connected to the Actiontec modem/router via an ethernet cable, connected to the printer via a USB cable, the printer works. Neither of the other two Macs on the LAN managed via that Actiontec modem/router, however, will connect to the printer.

I connected the printer to the Actiontec moden/router via an ethernet cable. I then went to the two Macs connected to my LAN via the Actiontec moden/router and they both printed documents. I assume that when I connected my iMac to the Actiontec modem/router that I was to disconnect the USB cable connecting it to the printer and I did so. Result: the other two Macs will print; my iMac will not. It returns: The printer is not connected.

I went to the my Actiontec modem/router's preferences page and for the printer it showed, under My Network:

PC Name: BRW0022581EE971 (the ID for the printer)
Connection Type: Wireless
IP Address: 192.168.1.10
Status: Active

I am afraid I don't know what you mean when you ask me: Does it show up in the DHCP list?

Also, is your question: Can you see it on the network? answered by the fact that it appears under My Network on the Actiontec modem/router?

Many thanks for your patience and help.

P.s., in case it is of any help, here is a link to the test page I printed out after resetting the printer a little before I applied your suggestions. This is offered in case it might provide any clues to what the problem is:

Wow, educational thread, but in the end hasn't helped me much.

Same scenario: MBA (2012) + new 2270DW

I can print wirelessly when I'm connected to SETUP (under airport menubar icon / devices / SETUP), but when I connect to my home network I can't. The printer (wireless one) is listed as idle/cannot connect when I try.

So if I want to print wirelessly it's a 4-step process:

2) print

I spent hours trying to get this working the way it should, and while connected to SETUP I accessed the printer's onboard config utility (see link) and manually configuring it to my home network, which confused the ***** out of things. I then had my home network listed in two places: under WiFi and under Devices... instead of the default SETUP name. This caused more headache and I've since reverted everything back to default (link), but my wireless printing is a pain in the ass.

Anyone have any ideas? Puhlease!

Man, is Brother here? Brother should be paying me for this :p

Ok, so what happens when you connect the printer using ONLY a USB cable (leave the router alone for now) and you try to run Brother's setup assistant to configure the wireless settings?

Remember, after it's set up and you disconnect the USB cable, you still need to go back and "add" the printer again.

I can print wirelessly when I'm connected to SETUP (under airport menubar icon / devices / SETUP), but when I connect to my home network I can't. The printer (wireless one) is listed as idle/cannot connect when I try.

It looks like you have two networks, one called "Setup" and another called "Maikasomething". Both the printer and the computer need to be on the same network for this to work.

It's not so much two networks. SETUP is the printer and the printer alone, and doesn't offer internet access, just access to the printer's config files which I access through the browser (see screenshot).

Muikamachi is the home network, and I've tried connecting to the printer though that... I think I spent 4 or 5 hours (!!!) trying various combinations of things, but no dice. To print, I have to connect to SETUP, under 'Devices'... like in the screenshot I posted.

What kind of wireless is Muikamachi? What kind of security does it have? Could it be that the printer simply doesn't support it? For example, I know the default security settings in the FIOS router are strange and some devices are not able to connect. On mine at home, I use a regular 802.11g wireless, with WPA2 Personal security passphrase and the Brother connects just fine.

i tried it under WEP, WAP / Personal, and no security, nothing worked. >_<
i'm probably going to call Brother tmrw a.m.

Quick question, please

I see folks here refer to: Setup (under airport menubar icon / devices / SETUP).

Is that an OS-specific item? Running Lion on two iMacs and a MB Air, when I go to the Airport icon in my desktop menu bar, it shows: Turn WiFi Off (or on), a list of the WiFi points in reach and, at the bottom, Join other networks..., Create network..., and Open Network Preferences...

There is no Setup. Nada.

What gives here???

Setup Solutions

I bought this printer (Brother HL-2270DW) last week to replace an inkjet MFP .
I am not looking back.

To those who have had problems installing this printer on their wireless network, I hope I can provide some assistance.
I had very little problems doing the install. (i'll explain the very little problems).

First, my hardware.

Airport Extreme 2009 edition (7.6.1)
MacBook Pro 17' 2009 late (10.7.4)
MacBook Air 11' 2011 late (10.7.4)
Brother HL-2270DW (Firmware 1.15 *****very important*****)

Before we start --- update all firmware - including firmware of printer which can be downloaded from the Brother website (http://welcome.solutions.brother.co...op.html?reg=us&c=us&lang=en&prod=hl2270dw_all)

Step 1. Connecting printer to network
The Airport Extreme has protected network setup.
How do you access this feature? Unfortunately Airport Utility 6+ does not allow you to access these features, you need to download Airport Utility 5.6 from Apples website (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482)
Once downloaded, start Airport Utility 5.6 and click on "Manual Setup".
Next, take your eyes and look at the very top of your screen.

You will see:
Apple Logo :)apple:): Airport Utility 5.6:File:Edit:Base Station:Settings: Window:Help

Click on "Base Station"
then
Click on "Add Wireless Clients..."
Make sure Allow client by: Pin is selected.
(do not click continue yet)

Got to your Brother HL-2270DW printer. Make sure it's on. On the back of the printer you will see two buttons that can be depressed with a paper clip below the ethernet and USB connections. Depress the one at the very bottom with a paper clip for 5 secs and then release.

The printer lights will flash and remain on indicating that it's ready to pair with a wireless network.

Go quickly back to your computer (my laptop was actually right beside the printer) and click "Continue".

The printer took 30 seconds to print out an 8 digit PIN number. Enter the PIN number that was printeed on your printer into your computer and voilla! Your connected. But we aren't done yet.

**if your printer did not print the 8 digit pin after 30 seconds, depress the "Go" button your printer 5 times to get it to print****
** I did not need to do this, but I read it on the Amazon.com feedback comments for the printer**

****So the little problem I had was that I was using the "First Attempt" setup in the Airport Extreme wireless protected setup. For some unknown reason - the printer wouldn't see the network******

Step 2. 10.7.4 Brother Hl-2270DW Drivers
Go back to the Brother HL-2270DW official website and download the 10.7.4 CUPS drivers
(http://welcome.solutions.brother.co...op.html?reg=us&c=us&lang=en&prod=hl2270dw_all)

Install them.
*I did a Disk Utility Repair Permissions before and after driver installation*
Here is where things get weird.
The MacBook Air - I had to restart
The MacBook Pro - I could proceed directly to installing the printer through "System Preferences", "Print & Scan" then "+" under printers and select the Brother HL-2270DW on the list.

That's it - now your done. I made it my default printer, I even created a profile to use less ink for jobs that I don't really need high quality.

If you need more help, just post your :
Hardware
Software
Firmware versions for all hardware
and the problem your having.

Hopes this helps someone have a quick and easy setup.

I really hate to rain on your parade, but when I set up the same printer about a year ago, it went even better than yours did. I.e., easier.

Once, when I had the same problem about which I posted, I was able to get everything working again by shutting off the modem, then the printer, then turning on the modem then the printer.

This time, you can see by my posts, that I am having HELL of a time getting my printing/printer sorted out again.

May you never run into the same problem.

SETUP is how the HL-2270DW identifies itself to the network, as seen in the menubar as well as the Brother config files.
** again, see here: http://cl.ly/1I2p0p2Y1v2p2E453t0Q
and my other screenshot.

From what I read online I needed to locate the printer's IP address. I did this by connecting the printer to the router by LAN cable, then pressing Go three times. This printed out 3 pages of printer settings, including the printer IP address, which is different from the MacBook Air IP address. Then I assigned the printer IP address under System Preferences / Print & Scan / + (add printer) / IP... and was able to locate the printer.

SETUP didn't appear until AFTER all of this.

Perhaps I should try again from scratch >_<... but I don't have time for another 4 or 5 hours' mucking about with the printer, I need to get on with my day. >_<;;;;

Printing HL-2270 DW Test Pages

FWIW, I went through both Brother manuals that came on the CD with the HL-2270DW and copied all the types of commands you can issue to the printer using the Go buttons on its cover. Hope they are of some use to others.

HOW TO RESET THE PRINT SERVER.
• If you have previously configured the wireless settings of the machine, you must reset the print server back to its factory default settings.
1. Turn off the machine.
2. Make sure that the front cover is closed and the power cord is plugged in.

Note
You can switch the wireless network to enabled/disabled, using the BRAdmin applications or Web Based Management (web browser). (For more information, see Other Management Utilities on page 6 of the Brother Network User’s Guide.

I first purchased this printer about a year or so ago. I wanted to print wirelessly from my iMac, my wife's iMac, and from the MB Air in the kitchen.

When I popped in the Brother CD and followed the instructions to set it up for wireless printing by temporarily connecting my iMac to the printer with a USB cable then disconnecting that USB cable at the end of the setup process, it worked flawlessly.

Last week, however, the printer would not accept print jobs from any of the printers on the LAN. Print/Scan panes from Sys Prefs on all three computers return: The printer is not connected.

I downloaded the latest Wizard from Brother: brxWLANwizard and ran it repeatedly w/o success.

Latest twist is then when I go run the Brother Wireless Device Setup Wizard, which worked just fine when I originally set up this printer a year or two ago, it now puts me in a circular hell.

At the very last step in the Wizard, it notes: You have completed the wireless network setup; please click next to continue installing drivers and software.

Click next, another window appears with: Choose the device you want to install; if your device does not appear in the list, please configure the wireless settings from the setup button.

The window was blank. Clicking on the Setup button restarts the Wizard all over again.

In desperation, I reset the printer according to instructions and tried the Wizard once again. Once again, I was sent to circular hell.

I did print out a status page and here's what I got, just in case anyone sees something amiss there.

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/1597869/Printer test sheet.pdf

This is really a major PITA!! I have spent all afternoon and can't get it working again.

Hi Speed38,

Can you give me a little bit more detail on your hardware; i see that you have iMac x2; MacBook Air; wireless router and HL-2270DW printer (Firmware 1.10) (from your printer test sheet you posted)

iMac - Year?? - OS??
MacBook Air - Year?? - OS???
Wireless Router - Brand??? - Version??? - Firmware??? - Wireless protected setup compatible???

I would recommend updating the firmware of your printer from 1.10 to 1.15. This will ensure greatest compatibility with current software.

Results from UBS to Wireless setup have been spotty from reviews I read from amazon (1000+ reviews with all kinds of issues).
The easiest setup (2 minutes max - thats how long it took me) seem to be via Wireless Protected Setup. It also seems to be the most stable (immune from random disconnects;unable to find wireless printer issues).

Thanks so much everyone, I finally got it working by following Sora's instructions, and after multiple router and MBAir restarts. It took about 5 or 6 attempts before it stuck.

FWIW, in Airport Utility 5.6, when you're adding the printer manually and it's searching for the printer on the network, if it fails to recognize the printer restart your Mac, reset the Printer network settings as per Speed38 and others' instructions (press Go + power on, then press Go 6 times), then relaunch Airport Utility 5.6 and go for it again. One time it actually recognized the printer, then returned an error. But the next time (after restarting the Mac) it worked, and auto-printed a WLAN report saying "Connection: OK" at the top and at the bottom reporting my network name (SSID) correctly for the first time - as opposed to 'SETUP' as before.

I was getting close to returning the printer to Amazon and buying the HL-2240, but I'm so glad I gave it one more shot. Once it's up and running normally, the printer is a dream. Wireless setup.... oy vey.

Again, thanks. :D

The Printer has ben updated to 1.15

The iMac is 24-inch Early 2009 model
MacBook Air is a 13-inch mid 2011
Router is an Actiontec MI424WR Wireless Broadband Router Revision E

Checking the router setting via Safari, the Firmware Upgrade pages lists current hardware version as 6A and software version as 20.19.8, release date 20 JUl 2011

Where did you find the Wireless Protected Setup choice? I inserted the Brother install CD that came with the printer and could not find it there.

Thanks.

FWIW, here are my screen shots of the same items you have posted.

Note that my WiFi does not include SETUP as yours does.

Summary of my situation at present

As I previously noted, I am beginning to suspect the problem is not with the printer but with my network. I have spent the better part of two hours testing all the connections and trying to carefully and logically describe this problem so that one of the router/network gurus might be able to spot something I am missing.

The hardware:

My iMac (Mac1)
Wife’s iMac (Mac 2)
MacBook Air (MBA)
All running OXS 10.7.4.

What I have been running for about two years, problem free, is a Verizon-supplied Actiontec MI424WR Wireless Broadband Router Revision E connected to Mac1 via an ethernet cable; the other two Macs connected via their Airport cards to the Wireless router.

Last week, before the problem with the printer began, this LAN was working just fine. I could use AirDrop between any of the computers & I could print from any of the computers. From one day to the next, I could no longer print and Air Drop stopped working. All the details of the printing problem and efforts to solve it are available via the above URL on the All Things Macintosh forum here.

Trying to fix the printer problem I noticed this:

With Mac1 CONNECTED TO THE ROUTER VIA AN ETHERNET CABLE, and with the Finder preferences for all computers set to show everything in the Finder sidebar here are the results:

Mac1 > Finder sidebar > Devices. The Mac1 shows but the Shared category does not even appear in the Sidebar. Checking the Print & Scan pane of Sys Prefs, the printer shows green dot/idle. Sending a print job to the printer results in that dot turning to yellow/in use. However, the printer icon appears in the dock with a lightning symbol in a yellow circle and opening it reveals: The printer is not connected.

Mac2 > Finder sidebar > Devices. The Mac2 shows. Under Shared > Mac1, Mac2, and the printer show. The printer prints.

MBA > Finder sidebar > Devices. The MBA shows. Under Shared > Mac1 and Mac2, and the printer. The printer prints.

However, with Mac1 CONNECTED TO THE ROUTER VIA WIFI and the ethernet cable disconnected everything works just fine; here are the results:

Mac1 > Finder sidebar > Devices. The Mac1 shows. Shared > Mac2 & MBA show, but no printer shows; Print & Scan Preferences Pane shows my Brother HL-2270DW with a green dot and “idle” and the printer will print.

Mac2 > Finder sidebar > Devices. The Mac2 shows. Shared > Mac1, Mac2, and the printer; and the printer accepts print jobs from this computer.

MBA > Finder sidebar > Devices. The MBA shows. Shared > Mac1 and Mac2, and the printer, and the printer accepts jobs from this computer.

SO, what all this comes down to is one question: why, when Mac1 is connected via the ethernet cable will the printer not show under Shared and not accept and print jobs from Mac1 which it previously did for several years???

It is driving me nuts. Yeah, I know, it’s not a long drive. ;-)

Thanks if anyone have the chance to look at this and make any sense out of it.

Firmware numbers

Why does this have to be so confusing?

When I enter the Brother Web Base Mgmt URL,
http://192.168.1.10/printer/main.html

It returns:

Printer Firmware Version : 1.15
Network Firmware Version : 1.10

When I print out a test page it returns:

Node Firmware Version: 1.10 (12.02.17) (i)

I just downloaded and ran the firmware update tool for Macs and it returned that my Firmware was up to date.

Whoops, think I may have just found the answer to my own question: The top of that test page reads: <Network Configuration> so that's probably the network firmware version???

SETUP is how the HL-2270DW identifies itself to the network, as seen in the menubar as well as the Brother config files.
** again, see here: http://cl.ly/1I2p0p2Y1v2p2E453t0Q

Perhaps I should try again from scratch >_<... but I don't have time for another 4 or 5 hours' mucking about with the printer, I need to get on with my day. >_<;;;;

OH, YOU BEAUTY!!!!!!!!

After days of poking around with settings, I went to Sys Prefs > Print & Scan > + > IP and in the Address blank typed in the address which my router showed for the printer (192.168.1.10), then went to the Print Using drop down menu and selected the Brother HL-2270DW series CUPS driver, and hit Add.

Closed the Print & Scan pane, tried and successfully printed a document.

What a journey, just to get the bloody printer working again.

However, learned a lot about printers and perhaps I can help someone else with the same problem.

Hey, I'm in the Washington, DC area and we got our power restored in the 5th.

Ok, the WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) is actually on your router (Actiontec MI424WR).
I did a google search for your router and there should be a white button on the front of your router that initiates WPS. It looks like this:
Verizon-FiOS-MI424WR-Rev-E-small1.jpg

As of firmware 20.19.7 WPS is NOT supported. I'm not sure if it's supported in your firmware 20.19.8.

To check if your devices has WPS support do the following:
1. Log into your router admin interface
2. Look at "Basic Security Settings"
3. Go to "Advanced Security Settings"
4. Check admin interface for WPS enable/disable option.

Let me know what you have the ability to "enable" WPS.

Once we have this established we can move forward on getting you hooked up.

Glad you got it working!! WPS (Wireless Protected Setup) can be a pain sometimes.
Enjoy!

How did you connect the iPads

do yourself a favor. call brother tech support. they will walk you through it in a couple of minutes. next to apple they are the best tech support. we have three brother printers on our home wifi network. brother had us up and running in five minutes. its really easy. btw, there is no need to connect usb etc. just go into printer pref as long as you are on line and the printer will be discovered and just select it. easy peasy. we also have our iPads connected to it plus an hp laptop.

I've got the printer on my wifi network but my iPad doesn't see it. Is there something I'm missing? I have PCs, iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.

I have the same printer and I connected the printer to my Linksys E4200 router. I had to use a cable as for some reason the printer does not appear to like my WPA2 and passphrase. No biggie.

I choose to give all my printers a static IP address, you can do this in the printer's web interface after plugging it into the router. At first your router will assign the printer an IP address, but since routers can change IP address in DHCP a static IP address is best.

I did not need the CD at all.

After that I was able to go to the System Setting and install the printer. Viola!!!

For the second time in sixty days I lost the connection to my Brother printer.

The last time this happened, once I did re-establish contact, I ignored the advice to set up a static IP address on the printer, not the router.

This time, when I lost access, even thought I could find the IP address of the printer, running the Safari Web Based Management for the printer would not connect me to the printer nor would running BRAdmin LIte, which I downloaded from the Brother site. I had to again connect to the printer via a USB cable, insert the CD that came with the printer, and run the install program. This allowed me to "see" the printer via both the Web Based Management page and BRAdmin Lite.

I then used BRAdmin Lite to access the printer settings and change the printer's IP address to Static.

Now let's see if that fixes the problem for good.
