I have just acquired a Dell 22' Monitor. I want to hook iy up to my MacBook Pro 15". I know I need a DisplayPort to DVI adapter But what kind of cable to I need? DVI-D Single?
    DVI-D Dual?
Since I am going to run an external monitor is there a way to make this work with the lid of the MacBook Pro closed?

The $30 single will be fine. And in answer to your second question, yes, all you have to do is attach a mouse and keyboard.

Monoprice has Mini Display Port to DVI Adapter for $12.50.

The Dell Monitor should have come with the DVI Cable you need.
Monoprice also carries DVI cables but I'd call Dell to send you a new one if your's is missing.
