hey everyone, ive searched everywhere on how to fix this problem, but nothing seems to help.

my situation is that im trying to share files between my mac and my pc, more specifically i just want to grab files from the pc and bring them to my macbook.

all the other computers on the network let me share, except for one, it keeps giving me "the alias could not be opened because the original file could not be found" then it gives me the option of fixing the alias, but it doesnt fix after that.

i've turned on all file sharing etc on my pc, but nothing seems to work.

what should i do??

Hmm. Try it from the other way. Enable Windows File Sharing on your Mac, mount the drive from your Windows machine, copy the stuff over.

i also notices that in my 'Network' folder on my mac, the 'Library' file is an alias and it wont let me delete it saying i dont have the priveleges, but that file wont fix itself either!

Second time posting this today. No worries though. Maybe read through this:
Apple Doc

For Ethernet (fastest way?):
If you have both computers in the same location, you may be able to use an Ethernet cable to connect both computers together and copy files between them. You may need an Ethernet crossover cable depending on which model Macintosh you own. See below the related document "Macintosh: Computers That Require an Ethernet Crossover Cable" to see if you will need an Ethernet crossover cable. This method has the advantage of being fast and being able to transfer any amount of data.

thanks for your help, but i would really like to get the wirless connection working, especially since it was working once before!

Easiest way to do it -

Don't worry about same workgroup or user name, that shouldn't matter.

The easiest connection method IMO is to access the PC from the Mac.

From desktop/Finder:
Apple-K (or choose Go->Connect to Server)

In the Connect to Server window, type:
smb://[computer name]/[shared folder]
(ignore the brackets, just type the info as designated where it goes, slashes and colons do count)

Don't worry about typing in the workgroup name, all you need is the computer's network name and the name of the shared drive or folder.

IE here where I work, my G5 Mac running 10.48 connects to 2 XP Home computers. My Mac isn't on the same workgroup (which is "MSHOME") nor is my user account the same, but my Mac will connect to the Windows computers.

Here I use smb://dell/desktop (for instance)

The other way around - I don't bother with because I don't need to access the Mac from the XP computers, only the other way around.

Try that above...it should work for you. You don't use the IP address, same workgroup, or same username. Just type in smb://computer name/share and it should connect for you. At the authentication window just hit enter (or click OK), I don't worry about typing in usernames or passwords here at my job and it connects fine.

Hope this helps :)

'Share' the directory or drive on your Windows machine and you should be able to access it this way.

A more thorough guide is here, although it incorrectly states that the Windows machine has to have a user account login password. (I share using my method all the time where I work on 3 Windows machines and none of them have a user password set.)

thanks, that helps, however i still cannot connect to this one particular PC on my network... the other pc i can connect to, but the other one cannot because it keeps giving me "the alias [name] could not be oppened because the original could not be found....."

the other pc on my network, when clicked on in finder, opens up very nicely.

why wont the other pc?

Make sure that File and Printer sharing is enabled on the troubled PC. Also, make sure that the XP firewall isn't blocking File and Printer sharing.
