Connecting PC to new iMac 27"

Thanks a lot for this, now I'm one step further!

Pressing CMD + F2 makes my screen go blank as if it's trying to get a signal from the PC, it stay blank for about three seconds, then turn (Mac-)blue and shows my MacOS Desktop again..

Maybe I should search for the problem on the other side of the DP cable in the ATI settings on the PC, have to recheck this.

Or the cable is damaged.. which is something I won't be able to find out with no other DP input devices here...

One question answered, more to go! But thanks again!!
 
I've broken out the popcorn awaiting to see the solution to this mystery.

You've gotten a step further. Maybe you can get ahold of someone at ATI to see if they can spend 5 minutes tweaking the Windows driver to send out the correct signal to be picked by the iMac. 😎
 
Maybe there is a 24/7 ATI support call center in the US you can help me out with a call to? 😀

So far I can tell you that

1. the ATI Catalyst Control Center on the PC doesn't see the iMac at all, no matter if I do the CMD+F2 switching or not

2. if I do the CMD+F2 thing two times in a row the iMac gets stuck and I only get control back if I send it to sleep pressing the power button and wake it up again

3. no newer version of the ATI Catalyst driver available

4. no clue what to do now... suggestions?
 
Well I'd like to see this tried out first.

Someone with another Mac with Mini-Display Port out needs to install Windows and try to use Target Display Mode. If that works under Windows we have more reference to work off of.
 
There has to be someone on the planet besides me trying to connect a PC with the new iMac... maybe I'll have to wait until next week and more experiences to come

Yeah it's annoying with such an expensive product and the shipping delays on some of them.

Sorry for being off topic, but get that thing into an Apple Store quick (or call Applecare)! They are obligated to give you a machine that doesn't have cracks and misfitted ports. Looks like the case on yours was installed incorrectly, and it might be causing tension that cracked the glass. If you do it within 14 days, they might just exchange the machine for you. Otherwise they will repair it.
 
Already called Apple Support. But in Germany you only get support questions answered on Saturdays - for defective hardware service I have to call again on Monday... But they surely will send me another one.

Maybe my miniDisplayPort is defective and this is why it's not working at all 😉
 
Have you tried switching into target display mode with the video cable disconnected and then quickly plugging same into the iMac or PC (try it at both ends -- maybe start with it disconnected at the PC, but still connected to the iMac)? Also, what if you switch to target display mode and then reboot the PC (you might try this after you get into the mode where the display seems to be "stuck" after the second attempt at command + F2). This type of workaround shouldn't be expected for "normal" operation but maybe these will allow you to get it working even if it is somewhat of a hassle.
 
So did you get this working?


A few sources claim to have the 5870 working from the PC to the imac with the mini dp to dp cable.

Nothing new so far....

Tried to connect the cable after switching with cmd + F2, tried different driver version on the pc - neither had any effect.

No I'm waiting for my iMac replacement which I expect to arrive next week and for the 10.6.2 release hoping this will bring improvements!

Can you name some source you read about having a ati workingt with the imac? Then I could try contact the guy(s) claiming they achieved a successful connection asking what I possibly did wrong...
 
...does your PC have to be setup to "output" from the DP, try setting that up so that the iMac has a signal to "catch"...

That might be one point.. ATI Catalyst Control Center on the PC just shows connected displays, for example my TV via HDMI oder my LCD via DVI - the iMac as display isn't shown in that list. No matter if I switch with CMD+F2 or re-connect it.
But the fact that the iMac screen goes blank for a few seconds when the PC is connected (or when I initiate the switch manually via the F2 command) shows me, that there is some kind of signal recognized - but nothing (understandable) to display transmitted, so the iMac switches back to MacOS...
 
Well, seems like I freaked the iMac out.. Now he's showing me a blue stripe in the display - time for a change...

Your main issue right now is trying to go from Display Port to Mini-Display Port. As of now the only way to utilize the 27" as a monitor is by connecting it to another Mini-Display Port device.

None of the adapters available anywhere in the universe are going to make the connection work. The only rumored one is one that Belkin had showed on it's website before it took it down. It wasn't even available for purchase and was rumored to be something in the works.

I have the 27" iMac, a Belkin MDP to MDP cable, and a 15" MBP. I am able to feed the signal from my MBP to the iMac with no issue at all. I have not tried sending the signal from the MBP to the iMac when I am in Bootcamp, but I will give it a try tonight to see what happens.
 
I also suspected that might be the problem.. but Apple as well as the DisplayPort guys say that the signal is the same (at least I read that everywhere). So there shouldn't be a problem - but there is!

And still nothing on the adaptors Apple said to come...
 
I've been following this thread intently, with my finger poised on the 'Buy' button of a DisplayPort-enabled graphics card. I'm surprised that it doesn't seem to be working especially if DP - > miniDP is the issue.

Given Apple's own website doesn't stipulate that it absolutely must be a mini-DP over a standard DP:

Mini DisplayPort output port with support for DVI, VGA, and dual-link DVI (adapters sold separately). 27-inch models also support input from external DisplayPort sources (adapters sold separately).


It's looking increasingly likely that these mysterious adapters are our only hope to get this working.
