connecting speakers to powerbook

i just recently bought some speakers for my powerbook and am currently connecting them through the headphone jack. i was wondering if there was another way to connect them to the computer because i dont want that plug taken up?

which one would give me better sound quality? connecting my speakers with the imic and using the 3.5mm plug or using the edirol UA-1EX and connect them with the l/r rca plugs?
