I am planning to put a TV in my bedroom and connect an Apple TV via HDMI.

I also have a Gear4 dock there that has a 3.5mm input. Would I be able to connect the ATV to both at the same time? Sometime I may just want to stream some AirPlay music without the TV on.

Apple TV (the small, black one) does not have analog audio output. So you'd need a D/A converter with TOSLINK input to get aTV-s audio out into 3.5mm audio in.

For your purpose, the AirPort Express would be easier choice.

Might even be cheaper than external D/A converter. And you can run one side-by-side with an aTV.

you can get a convertor for under $25 from monoprice.com
you'd then need a stereo RCA (red/white plugs) to 3.5mm adapter (a couple bucks also from monoprice)

If the dock has a combination optical/analog jack (looks just like a headphone plug but can also take optical, it's what's been in all macs for several years) you can just use a toslink to mini-toslink cable. no converter needed.

or if the dock has airplay, you can set the aTV up to airplay to the speakers
