I'm unsure whether this belongs in software or this forum... figured I'll give it a shot here.

I've currently got an ADSL/Wireless G modem/router combo. The ADSL modem part of it is the best I've had, holding high sync rates - so I'm keeping that.

My idea was to plug in a spare wireless n router (running ddwrt) to provide a wireless N network with the same ssid and password as my existing one. That's all done, and my iPhone 4 connects to the N network no problems.

However, I've cleared the airport settings in my MacBook, tried to connect again and it always connects to the g network rather than the n. The settings are fine because if I disable the wireless function on the original router, the Macbook will quickly hop onto the N network without a problem. Reenable G and the Macbook hops back onto that network.

Does OS X prioritise by signal strength by any chance? As my G network is being broadcast at 100mW (legal limit for UK), and my N is at half that and unable to change. I have the Airlock widget on my dashboard and it shows my SSID broadcasting at g only - again until I disable the existing wireless network and the N one will show up.
