his example had two 2tb drives in raid 1 that would be 2tb real space wich btw is plenty for most people if you need more i suggest a promise or g-tech 4 bay raid5 all 2tb drives meaning 6tb space

But, again, with a g-tech 4 bay Raid 5, you lose the ability to mix and match drives and upgrading the array in the future will not be nearly as easy as with the Drobo.

As for 2TB being "plenty for most people", I think it was Bill Gates who once said, "No one will ever need more than 637 kb of memory for a personal computer."

true both systems certianly have advantagesb and dis advantage what you discribe is the dis advantage of r5 while there are many disadvantages to beyond raid . but r5 is n*smallest drive -1 so you could have 2 2tb and 2 1 tb and have 3 tb and upgrade the 1tb drives to 2tb for 6tb

true! prepahps i should have said plenty for most people now:)

Best thing about a Drobo

The nicest thing I found about my Drobo is that it'll take 4TB drives when they come out. That means my Drobo will last me a LONG time. I won't have to replace it forever, practically.

cool fair enough i was just wandering if you could have used the :apple: airports 'usb disk to network drive' feature by getting the normal one and pluggig it into the usb port on the airport thus saving money thats all
Both USB and Gigibit connections work, but the network connection is up to 50% faster than the USB alternative.

yea sure but more expensive too . i guesa the op could also consider the fs as its fastet but it is more expensive

Thanks for the suggestion

I looked into purchasing a Drobo. I settled on a Synology NAS device as it provided quite a few more features and the price was quite a bit less. Look at the Synology website and check the feature set compared to what Drobo offers. Look at other devices from Iomega, Buffalo, NEtGear, HP,etc. Make sure an investment in this price range covers all your needs.

I was about to abandon my Seagate BlackArmor 420 NAS and buy a drobo. Thanks to your suggestion, I investigated Synology and ended up purchasing the 1010+ NAS. It arrives tomorrow.

It looks like a really great product/system/ company/support.
