How future proof is it? Is it likely to get iOS 8? I am on budget here and do not want spend to much money on gift...but I want it at least somewhat future proof...at least it will hold for next OS update....

Judging by apple's history, yes. It will get ios 8. I say this because they're still selling it.
For example, they sold iPhone 4 with 6, it got 7. Now they're not selling it any more, so won't get 8.
The processor in the iPad mini is also in several other iOS devices still on the market. Including Apple TV, iPhone 4S, iPod 5, and ipad 2.

Fingerprints on front or back? I always get black because I like how it looks with the screen -- feels more unobtrusive than staring at a white border all the time. I've never noticed any fingerprints in the front, and if there are fingerprints in the back, doesn't bother me because I'm not looking at the back when I'm using the iPad.
No! I returned my white one because it would not conceal a fingerprint to save its life
