Hi Guys

I am considering hanging onto my 2021 16” Macbook pro m1 pro max, and using it as a spare computer for web browsing, email and casual gaming starcraft 2, warcraft 3 reforged, some older warhammer games.

How much life can get from it, after Apple stops OS updates, can i still play whatever apps & games i have already installed.

What's a pro max? Do you mean M1 Max? I have this machine and it still runs like butter. It's more than for web browsing, it's for actual work.

Pending when Apple stops OS support (I would assume 2028/2029?) You're good for now.

I wouldn't waste money on a new OLED MacBook Pro, the miniLED is already pretty good (except the bloom issue on blacks) but that's a non issue really.

The biggest jump you're going to see to a M5 Pro/Max is the single core performance/multi core performance and GPU. It won't be night and day, but it will be a big jump. After all these are already 5 year old machines.

lets just say i am typing this to you from macbook pro 2015 and its working as good as new.

i don't think Apple stops updating software in less than 7 years so you got at least 2 more years, at least....

Agree with others. That computer has tons of life left. If you can afford it / just "want" the new OLED one when it comes out, we can all make that decision after we it's released and have all the details.

But the computer itself - still the newest MBP body. And the M1 Max (or M1 Pro) isn't that dissimilar to the M4 Max / M4 Pro, if your needs aren't that processor-heavy. The M1 was such a great chip overall for that reason.

Let's say that Apple drops support for the M1 after macOS 27 (i.e. that is the last version that supports it), it should be good doing everything it's doing now through 2030. Add 1-2 years if Apple decides to support the MacBook Pro M1 models slightly longer than the MacBook Air M1.

I still own my M1 Pro Max 16"

Will upgrade when the M6 Pro Max with OLED and touch is announced, but a year from now.

I will probably sell this M1 Pro Max very soon while I can still get $1k for it (through online resellers). I'll move to my 13" MacBook Air for the next year.

I did exactly this. I had a day 1 14" M1 Pro (32gb / 1tb), that still had tons of life left, but still had good resale value (a great 32/1TB config helped), and great battery (94% health with only 120 cycles).

I didn't "need" the power of the Pro... and so I sold it and replaced it with a 15" M4 MBA 16/512 that I bought like 6 months ago on a great sale. Fantastic machine and more than I need , and love the size.

I'm going to keep this until the new OLED MBPs come out. And I can make the decision after I see it, if I want to upgrade or not (it would be a "want", not a "need" lol).

Would highly recommend if you're thinking of it. Only thing I'll say it consider 15" instead of 13". The 15" MBA is a beautiful machine, especially if you use it "like a laptop" a lot, out and about, in bed, etc. vs mostly plugged in to external monitors / peripherals.

Battery is probably toast anyways. It chemically degrades overtime even under optimal conditions

How did you sell your M1 Pro?

Have used itsworthmore.com in the past but they are getting some pretty bad reviews about being shady.

On Swappa - they're pretty good for buying/reselling used Apple hardware (among other things). It's basically an Ebay for consumer tech - but less scammy. Not perfect, but I've had good luck both buying and selling on there.

These batteries last forever. I rarely hear about people's MBP batteries dying on them. But yes, that is probably the first thing to go in most cases, but probably won't happen with most M1 MBP's until after 2030. And then you can still keep using it plugged in.

I have an early 2011 MBP, whose last macOS update was High Sierra, that I've been using as a backup server and internet connection monitor for the past several years, so that's 15 years of service.

I just retired the 2011 this past weekend, replacing it with my 2020 M1 MBP since I have a new M5 Pro MBP. In the process, I discovered that the trackpad on the 2011 had died. I've been accessing it exclusively by sharing its screen from the M1 for the past few years, so I never knew!
