I'm a little late to the party as I see you've ordered but I'll throw in my two pennies anyway.

Given the option within budget I'd have gone for a;
15" PowerBook
12" PowerBook
12" iBook
14" iBook
in that order assuming you could get 1Gb of RAM.

That said you'll love the iBook.

One thing I didn't see mentioned was what word processing software you intend to use? As a freelance writer I'm guessing you have a preference and have you checked out what's available for OSX?

I've had problems with the defacto MS Word/Office but I know other find it OK and there are other options.

also, are you a student? or do you apply for any other discounts? They are great. bought a new ibook about a month and a half ago with a student discount. brand new didn't even come over 1000 bucks. Since then apple has pulled me in...bought more RAM, iwork, video ipod, nano ipod, univeral dock, microsoft office 2004 (for school purposes and work purposes--tears were drawn when I had to do this..hahaha). But seriously, look to see if you apply for any kind of discounts...its worth it. In any case, the 12" has been great for me.
also one thing to consider is a larger hard drive, i have a 40gb external...so i didn't mind the 40gb internal...but i still regret not upgrading that...

Yes I am a student and did apply for the discount, came in handy.

I just got my iBook yesterday. I just opened the box this morning and made sure everything was in there. Looks good so far, I have to power it up still. I'll do that this evening after work. Can't wait!

No longer a student, but working for John Lewis, I still get about the same discount, if not more, (12% for staff), but two years warranty. Absolute bargain, especially if it conks out three days before the end of two years, unlikely as that is.

It's tough!

The only reason I didn't power it up is because I got home really late from work and had to wake up at 5 a.m. today for work.

I can't wait to get home! :D

Did you get the 12" or the 14" one? I wouldn't recommend the 14-inch model. It's too heavy (2.8 kg) and the screen resolution is the same.

I did get the 14" one, but it isn't bad at all. Compared to the brick of a laptop I had before, this one is light as a feather.

I'm loving it!

After I powered it up it automatically detected our wireless network at home and I was browsing the web in minutes! It was a chore trying to get my other windows-based computers to get on the network. I am still trying to get used to it and figure out how everything works, plus getting used to not using the "right-click", but it's a great learning experience!

As far as software is concerned, I have a friend that has the MS Office Suite for Mac's and said they haven't had any problems. We'll see how it goes.

You still can right click... press 'control' + left click. Or.. you can just plug in a multi-button mouse. ;) I use MS office and while it's not the speediest app out there, it does all right.

Aww, sorry about that. Coincidentally, did you know the McRib is back? :p

Thanks for that tip. I may get a mouse for it later.
