I have around 20 GB of photos on my Mac, but then the problem is that I have to open my Mac to view them. I would like to be able to look at them on my iPhone and iPad where I am already running low on storage. So I am considering buying more storage on iCloud to be able to do this. However, I am not sure this is the way to go because I don't fully understand how iCloud is supposed to work. For example, if I upload 20 GB of photos to iCloud I will not be able to download all of them to my iPad. From what I understand I will be able to see all of them as thumbnails and when I click on one photo it downloads that photo temporarily. Or am i missing something? How do I know which photos are on the device and which ones are on iCloud?

If I want to share some of the photos with family and friends I know that I can use shared photostreams. But what if I would like to share all of the 20 GB of photos, then a shared photostream would probably not be a good solution, right?

One last thing. The photos on my Mac are already sorted into folders. Can I keep that structure when moving them to iCloud? Otherwise it seems to me that it would take a long time to find the photo I am looking for. Another thought I had was to drag and drop the folder containing all of the photos into iCloud. In iOS 9 I would then be able to access them with the iCloud Drive app, but I haven't been able to test this.

Feel free to suggest other cloud services other than iCloud, though since I am already using iCloud I believe it would be the easiest to set up.
