If you truly are buying the device for the primary purpose of playing music, the classic wins by leaps and bounds. As for being a well-rounded omnibus device, not so much.

Well said. The Touch is an amazing device but I find the iPod part the most cumbersome to use. I love the scroll wheel, especially while driving or jogging. I suppose you could also use the Classic as an external HD also.

Nano

If space it not much of an issue and you want it primarily for music why not consider getting a Nano? I have the 2G version and I love it for just playing music. Both the Touch and the Classic are very heavy and bulky in comparison.

I had an iPod nano 4G and sold it not long after receiving it.

In my opinion, the sound quality had something lacking and the device seemed a bit flimsy with a "toy" like quality.

I also prefer something with a longer battery life.

However I do appreciate the size of the unit and the amount of features that apple has managed to contain in the device, but there has been some trade off.

Thanks for everyone’s responses.

Still though, the poll appears to be a dead heat at 7-7.

i didn't vote, because I dont want neither, but among the two, obviously iPT. Classic users just want more people to share their pain, dont be fooled.

I voted for the touch for one reason: it can entertain you after you've grown tired of listening to your music.

If it's just music, get the classic. It's a real music lover's iPod. But if you want movies on it, and want to use the app store, which is a BIG plus, get the touch.

Voted for the iPod Touch. Music, movies and some really great apps all incased in an amazingly thin device. You can't go wrong!

I wonder how the sound quality compares between the new classic and the 3G touch.

I have heard that the 3G touch is similar to the iPhone 3GS in terms of sound quality which had excellent reviews specifically from "audiophiles".

i like how you say 'looking' because coverflow is just a gimmick. cool the first few times and then you never use it. and the classics have it (as do nanos), it's not quite the same 'wow' factor because of screen size, but its there.

well heres some pics, and explanations:

COVERFLOW!!!! - a feature the ipod touch, that the classic doesnt have, and is pretty cool looking:

That top bar is a music skipper thingy, like i was saying, you just drap it to where you want, and it starts playing:

if you're looking for music, get a classic. i prefer it's stronger build quality, higher storage capacity, and physical buttons. having owned ipods since 03 and iphones since day 1, i think i'm a somewhat decent user on both. i prefer the classic because i can throw it in a bag easily and not worry about it much. it's also great for leaving in your pocket and not having to take it out, unlock the screen, look at the controls on the screen, and touch where you want to go next. (granted, with the inline remote, this problem partially disappears, but you know what i mean). i also have 65gb worth of music which the new touch would almost fit, but then i couldn't fit other content such as videos, photos, or more importantly, back up data for my computer.

the touch (or iphone) on the other hand is great because it does do more than just play music. it's screen is great and the controls are very intuitive to use. downsides are that battery life isn't as great (because honestly, no one listens to JUST music on an ipod touch to get the full life out of the battery) and the fact you have to look at the controls to use them (although you do get used to guessing where they are after a while).

i voted for classic because of the physical buttons, ease of use, and storage size. but really, whatever floats your boat. i don't know why you're so bent on 'whatever the majority says'. check them out yourself, see what fits your needs, and get what you want. who cares what a bunch of internet strangers say?

Personally, I would get the touch. It may not hold as much, but it has a bigger screen for movies and you can download a bunch of apps.

Two advantages of the Touch:

1. It has a SEARCH feature, so you can search your library by text vs. scrolling through to find the song.
2. You can jump to a letter on the right side of the screen (the classic does scroll letters if you continuously scroll for a bit)

However, the click wheel may still be more convenient if using while driving for example. Try out both at an Apple store!

get an ipod nano, cheaper then both, has a clickwheel, and a video camera, works for me! :D:D:D

I love that it's now tied 20-20 :p

"I don't almost have a heart attack every time I drop the thing"

ALmost the EXACT opposite, this reminded me, the Ipod Classic uses a Hard drive which is fragile if you drop it, whereas the Ipod Touch uses flash memory, that can be dropped and still remail intact, and it also keeps the Ipod Touch THIN, where the Classic is pretty thick still :/

You know, I'd forgotten about the hard drive vs flash argument. For what it's worth I've been using hard drive based iPods for almost 5 years. I'm clumsy as hell but I've never had a hard drive die yet.

What I really meant is as soon as I drop my iPhone my heart stops. The screen! The precious screen!!! My iPod video on the other hand I trust not to smash into pieces (and it's repeatedly proved me right. Many many many scratches and scrapes after 3 and a half years, but nothing actually broken)

classic should be discontinued, its been on life support purely to get some $$$ from confused users. Its a disgrace.

Yuuhuh. If my iPod broke tomorrow and my back up ipod mini had somehow disappeared the Classic is the only iPod I'd consider buying. I've never liked how small the nanos are and I couldn't deal with owning both an iPhone and a touch.

What I should have said in my original post is that the touch is great for video. I used to use my iPhone for video on my lunchbreak at work and it was fantastic compared to my old iPod. I also use my iPhone a lot for ebooks and occasionally run emulators to play old sega games (jailbreak only)

Really for me, I prefer the Classic for music and I prefer the iPhone for apps and internet. For me the touch doesn't have the best of either world - its music interface isn't as good as the clickwheel and you can only use it online if there's wifi, plus the apps that can only be used on the iPhone (need a camera etc) But that's just me

I'm very neutral on which one I think is better.

I used to own a 5.5g 80gb iPod w/ video and it was great. I filled it with movies and a lot of songs from various music collection I owned, and as well as ones that my relatives had. It was great to have since I could listen to tons of songs throughout the day and know I always had a variety of music at my disposal. It was great for long trips too.

I currently have a 16gb iPod touch 2g and use it for surfing the web, using social apps, playing games, and watching videos on its wide screen ratio. The iPod touch is very versatile which makes it great to have. Knowing that the iPod touch now comes in 32gb and 64gb, it's great to know that you can have a great product that plays music (and can store a lot of it too), as well as having a pocket computer-like product, and a little gaming console too. More than just that, the App Store has some great apps for music such as AOL Radio, and, my favorite, Pandora Radio.

You can always purchase an iPod classic for the experience of just music, a few extra features, and physical buttons (which helps a lot when you want to switch songs while your iPod is in your pocket).

But to really give you a recommendation, even though you already are considering moreover the iPod classic, I recommend that you purchase a new iPod touch.

With the new price tags (cheaper 32gb) and a new 64gb at a good price, you can get the best out of a music experience with all the storage, Genius playlists, Genius mixes, other standard iPod music features, and as well as the App store that has a variety of music apps such as AOL Radio, Pandora Radio, iMeem, and many more. Also, you can stream music straight off the internet too via Safari, or listen to attached audio files from your email.

With the iPod touch, you can have a great music experience, and totally make what you want of the iPod touch with all the great apps that are available at the App Store.

Hope this helps in making your purchase. =)
