Constant need to reset SMC

When my battery runs low, the macbook now powers off. It used to go into sleep until I charged it when it would open with all apps running. Now, I put the charger into my mac and it powers up and says 'not charging'.

An SMC reset and some fiddling around resolve this issue everytime. But, it's happening 2-3 times a day now...

What would be causing this?

How old is the battery and have you calibrated it recently or ever? Do you use Coconut Battery?
