Only thing I found was.

3 long tones, 3 short tones, 3 long tones Firmware restoration from CD in process. See this article for more details.

And the reverse (3 quick, 3 slow, 3 quick) on Apple's site is for "please insert the firmware restoration CD"

Don't know why the machine would get caught in this loop.

I would realllyy like to know why my machine would do this.

And, if i do need to restore the firmware, what kind of changes will I experience?

About the Firmware Restoration CD (Intel-based Macs)

OK - this is a long shot but have you tried holding down the power-button while it is starting up. Hold your finger on the button and don't let go until you hear a loud tone - and see if that works....

The symptoms are similar to firmware but somehow I think we have a hardware/logicboard problem.

logana, yes i have tried that, but no success.

i would definitely rather it a firmware problem than a hardware one, but i guess you can't really choose.

i don't think i have much choice but to find a pro now.
