I'm pretty knowledgeable when it comes to prosumer/professional cameras. An area I know nothing about though is the consumer market. My wife is pregnant and we want to get a consumer camera to document family stuff, not one of my big cameras for professional stuff. To illustrate how out of the loop I am regarding consumer cameras I didn't know they had recordable DVD (on their way out?) and memory card/HDD cameras until I started investigating.

Can anyone recommend a consumer camera that is reasonably priced?

The Canon HV20 has incredible performance for a consumer camcorder. It is, however, a tape unit, and many amateurs are allergic to tape.

The JVC GZ-HD7 is a nice HDD camera, but it's a bit expensive.
