I wish I could say my Bumper case fixed it...

...but it didn't. It's just not as pronounced a drop in signal strength.

bahahaha guess apple's plan to fool us with their lovely letter didnt work and now they look even more stupid in public

i like their products but their ignorant behavior is starting to piss me off

If you read the report carefully you will see they consider the iPhone to be the best thing out there as long as you don't want to use it as a phone in the fringe reception area.

Only problem being that almost all of us are in weak reception areas on a daily basis. For example, while I'm at work my signal is very strong. When I'm at home it's not that strong.

So suggesting it's ONLY a problem if you want to use the phone in a weak reception area is a lot bigger problem than you make it sound like. There are weak areas all over the place, and many of us travel in and out of them on a daily basis.

I watched CR video. Its seems to be a legitimate test.

However, after that it gets a bit silly and unprofessional. It seems that the reviewer is biased against Apple. My reason is because he suggests using a big piece of duct tape and then ads a snide remark that it ruins the looks.

If I were the reviewer I would have shown how any case will eliminate the issue. I would also suggest that a consumer could cut a small piece of household scotch tape if they want the phone anyways but do not want a case.

In the end a professional reviewer would state that "I do not recommend buying the iphone4 unless you plan to buy a case."

I have waited a couple of months after each iPhone has been released to pick one up, so I'm not a super early adopter. But I gotta say, I'm not going to buy an iPhone 4 unless Apple addresses this signal issue and I start reading some reviews that confirm that it's fixed. I tend to think that the firmware update explanation is bs too (we'll find out soon enough), so I may be waiting until they update the hardware. If they don't fix it, they've lost a sale to me.

You can't say all. The four people I know with an iPhone 4 DO NOT have any signal issues.

While i can purposefully make my signal drop by holding it via the "death grip"---i have yet to have a dropped call because of it.

I will say though---overall, the phone experience on iP4 is not as good as the 3GS.

Nice

Yet another blackeye for Apple in a two month period of time.

Like I said from day one, it's a design issue. The one thing Apple design to do, increase signal strength and it dose the excat reverse.

As long as Aplpe refuses to offer a real fix I will continue to hold my blackberry anyway I like. It may have a crappy OS - but it never lets me down when it comes to making calls.

So, have you bought a iphone4 and tested it, in your area, to see if it drops calls. Or are you just a bitter blackberry troll?

If you know that the blackberry has a crappy OS then why not buy the iphone 3gs?

Why don't you take back the phone? You obviously don't need a phone since you don't actually make any phone calls and you just watch the signal bars all day long.

Maybe this has been said before, I haven't had time to read all 12 pages of comments but... Consumer Reports? They cover a lot of things, but none well. If you are an expert in any area for which they give quick coverage you readily see how bad they are. Consumer Reports, in a nutshell, sucks. I'd certainly never buy or not buy anything based on their 'rankings.'

Of course the press love a story like this and consider Consumer Reports to be the gold standard. Lazy journalism.

Not every case stops it, might be why he said that. Also he wasn't being an ass by using the scotch tape as its a well known "fix"

Apple is quickly deleting any CR references on their discussion boards

I'm telling ya. I've always been a big apple supporter, but I really hope some of the upcoming lawsuits calm down that companies ego. There are really out of control when it comes to denial and controlling their image.

There is theory that there is supposed to be clear coating around the band and that some arent getting it.

Since some (or many?) claim not to have a problem that would seem to point to a manufacturing defect rather than a design flaw.

The worst thing for Apple in this case is probably the fact that even the fanbois now see what a blatant compulsive liar nutJobs is. When he was lying about Flash and other stuff fanbois were defending him like lunatic desciples.

Now it hurt them as well with his rubbish "it's just representation of the bars" story.

Well said. I guess if fanboys are fxxked by SJ, and they can not stop it. then just enjoy the temporary happiness

Duct tape will fix anything.

But seriously, who wants to buy a phone that you cant use...AS A PHONE!

PLEASE READ: I'm just curious if anyone else can confirm this,

The main issue is a hardware one but there is also a software glitch. If I cover the spot my 3g will drop and go to no service.....not even edge data. If I disable 3g and do the same with just edge it doesn't effect it. So something about the software doesn't seem to at least tell the phone to switch to edge which is a diff frequency that doesn't seem to be effected or only slightly.

At the very least the edge problem should be able to be fixed with an update? Anybody else notice this?

i also see this problem with the 3g data, it drops down but then finds the edge data and becomes a full signal again, no matter how i old mine i doesn't loose signal on the edge data, but i also hold the 3g network in a lot more places than i did before

They are not in the business of selling cases, so for them to say that would potentially sell cases in order to get the phone to work.

The test was on the phone alone and not the add on's like the cases.

I'm going to go ahead and call it now. It's a manufacturing issue that mostly effected early batch phones. The pre-orders were just too much for Apple to prepare for launch and the supplier hurried things or cut corners to get them out in time.

Once demand has been satisfied Apple will mention that anyone having a signal issue should bring their phone in for a new one.

My evidence? :) One friend got his on launch day and has the problem. Another friend in the same area got his a week later, no problem. I got mine a week later and no problem (and trust me I try and try in weak signal areas, and pretty much anywhere I go).

Doesn't say much for the Consumer Reports Labs and their testing regime.. worked great inside the labs, failed outside the labs.

That explains a lot about CR :p

If the problem in bezel, why they cant came up with some replacement for metal parts or cover them with something. It's a great phone otherwise, but it has to many problems. btw the glass is very easy gets scratches... dont know how it's 30 times stronger than regular one.
* Lost Prototype
* Signal Issue.
