a lot of parents who decide what phones their teenage kids can have.

LOL. I have a fair amount of experience, both in software and hardware. Think about it for a minute - the purpose of an antenna is to collect signal. When you bridge the antennas, the issue is NOT that signal from the wifi/bluetooth is being sent to the 3g antenna. The issue is you have changed the effective size of the 3g antenna. It no longer functions properly as an antenna. Therefore the signal-to-noise ratio of what the antenna can send on to the circuitry drops substantially - there is nothing there for the signal processor to work with.

How many parents are buying their teenagers iPhones?

No surprise, I wouldn't recommend getting the iphone 4 either, at least until there is a fix. I think since we haven't really heard anything from Apple, it looks like it is a design flaw. They either overlooked it or took the risk to make the design look like it does..

I know some people say they are not experiencing any issues, if thats the case for you then great. But there even more people who are experiencing signal issues.

I think its silly to buy something extra to get it to work, or to hold it a certain way.. or putting some tape on.. We shouldn't have to go down that road.. Even if its a simple solution.. I'm just saying your customers aren't going to be happy if they have to compromise to use the device..

Nothing we don't already know and hasn't been confirmed. It's a good thing I'm not going caseless with my phone. Sucks for almost everyone is though.

I couldn't resist.

I get better reception with my iPhone 4 than my 3GS

In my apartment I could not carry on a call for more than 2 minutes on my 3GS without dropping the call. (Worked fine on edge, but not 3g) However, with my iPhone 4 I carried on a 2 hour call without a drop or any voice quality issues. One thing I do have a problem with is the proximity sensor and point people on mute or calling other people and eventually hanging upon people. I think most people are hanging up on people because the sensor is not working properly and they think it is a dropped call.

1. The problems at launch
2. Why design a bumper, it's an odd product, arguably ineffective as a protective skin
3. Apple knew of this fault before launch

But I've been told here that it's purely coincidental that Apple decided to start selling bumpers when they introduced a phone that has antenna issues that are somehow magically alleviated by these same bumpers.

You can afford it.

Each iPhone you sell gets you $599-$699 ($199-$299 plus $400 kickback from AT&T). Your $29 bumper probably only costs about $10 to make. Give some away, please.

Actually, considering Apple's profit margins, the bumper case would not cost more than $3 to make.

Wow! Not good! I STILL don't have mine (Best Buy SUCKS)!

Wow! Did you preorder before the release? Have you tried elsewhere? Apple and AT&T stores in my area are still out, but just this weekend I learned that someone simply walked into Walmart and bought one. The clerk told her he had only sold a few and didn't know why everyone thought they were sold out.

All this talk about free bumpers is pathetic and degrading to the consumer. Do you realize that you signed up for a three thousand dollar contract and you're begging apple for a rubber band that costs CENTS to make?

Simple solution: return your iphone4 and get a droid.

But you won't do that, will you?

Difficult to arrive at this conclusion, but whenever every thing else fails, what is left must be the truth:

Folks in mr are not representative of the general public ....

Every one that I know with an iphone4 do not care a bit. If you have a problem, buy a case.

If you buy an iPhone4 you can afford a freaking case.

But... That makes no sense... Sorry dude...

Who could give this story a negative? It should only get positives seeing as how Consumer Reports finally is stating it's a "design flaw," which is what it is. I'm the biggest Apple fanboy, but Steve, your "form over function" mantra stopped working. This should be a phone that does all this cool stuff, not a device that does all this cool stuff, but is also a phone.

Out of the blue, Apple makes a Bumper.. to hide the looks of the unit? Fat chance. They knew about these issues before, but Steve wanted stainless steel band, so he got it. If you look at the inside of the bumper, you are totally insulated from touching any part of the metal exterior of the phone... they even went so far as to add the buttons so you wouldn't have to come into contact with the phone (the interior has a membrane which separates the metal built-in buttons from touching the actual buttons. In short, Apple knew what they were doing.

I smell a big recall coming.

Remember the delay with the white iPhone??? It was to fix this antenna issue. Don't let anyone fool you. Apple isn't following the "do no evil" mantra that Goole set out to follow.

Wait a minute. They say that the AT&T network is not to blame and yet they were unable to reproduce the problem consistently in all locations?

They failed to reproduce it in their test lab but then they took it somewhere outside, presumably an area with bad reception, and were able to reproduce it. Sorry but how is this not a localized problem caused by AT&T towers?

Could it be that people experiencing dropped calls were getting dropped calls on their previous phones too in the same locations?

- This is complete B.S and conspiracy from Google, Nokia, RIM, MS, SonyEricsson, ... well, you name it

- Any phone in a weak signal area can loose the connection depending how we hold the phone, the direction, or even any obstacle.

- My previous blackberry and iPhone 2G/3GS had tiny changes of bars when I hold them in some places

- My iPhone 4 is not worst than all of my previous phones... It actually works find. I had "only" 1 drop call while driving so far (in 2 weeks), when I had 1 every time I was calling with my previous phone.

- Please people, return your iPhone... so many people are waiting for their phone... it will make everyone happy :)

Apple needs to learn one thing from Microsoft: have a more comprehensive beta testing phase to eliminate some of the low-hang issues.

LOL! Two words: Xbox 360.

If you hold the phone in your left hand it's not your pinky that's the issue. It's your palm. And your palm is the thing that is keeping the mostly-fragile-glass phone from crashing to the floor.

So how is it I can hold my iPhone in my left hand without killing the signal or dropping the phone? Am I the only person with fingers? Is it imperative to bury the corner of the phone in your palm to hold it? Not for me. I guess I'm weird that way.

I have checked everywhere and they all just have waiting lists for 7-14 days. I pre-ordered on day ONE! I tried all day with Apple, then them and AT&T stopped taking pre-orders so I went to Best Buy. Ya I am pissed, they suck sooo bad!

Mine works fine. Besides who buys an iPhone for the phone. The camera is superb, love the zoom and the video. Straight to Facebook and YouTube.

Now if they would fix my iPad always dropping the WiFi connection and changing strength all the time.

I do not dispute that the antenna issue is a problem, but I am irate that conspirators feel that these bumpers are a sign that Apple knew about the problem before launch.

That's just wrong. Dead wrong. The case is a typical Apple - low profile but useful. It protects the sides well, and by raising the phone a couple of mm's does aid to protect the phone. It's no where near the protection of other cases, but it is protection - not to help the antenna.

What did you expect Apple to make? They are about incredible design; I think they made it clear in their keynote - if you want a proper case, don't buy a bumper.

Must be reading a different story - they reproduced it in their test lab on the iPhone 4 - not on other handsets.

Wow! Not good! I STILL don't have mine (Best Buy SUCKS)! I really hope I don't have these problems and I hope this "fix" Apple releases in the next couple weeks actually has a positive affect!

It will be very interesting to see what Apple does next year. Will they redesign it? That would be a HUGE admission that there is a flaw. Or will they make a smaller revision without a redesign, like putting some sort of clear coating around the band?

I am wondering that very same thing MacFly! Why won't apple just admit that there is a flaw fix the phone and move on! If they do redesign it then they are obviously admitting there was a problem from the beginning....disapointing to say the least.......

Never seen mac community this divided

my original iPhone 4 and the replacement i got both has exact problem.

It is damn nice smart phone with reception issues. There is no phone near to it iPhone 4 yet - in terms of performance, battery life, features and UI.

We will return the iPhone 4 once there is a phone to match it is skills but then again two rights cannot make one wrong go away
