Actually my MacBook Pro (2011 17" quad-core) does the same thing. During very heavy load it will not charge and actually drain the battery slowly. I've read on the MBP forums that this is normal, though obviously not ideal.

Always trade-offs. Apple could have included an even bigger battery or charger, but then even more weight. This is probably not a big deal for most iPad users.

I have the same issues with my MacBook and not charging during heavy load use.

The only noticeable difference for me on the iPad 3 is the weight, and I wouldn't want a bigger battery, nor a fan in this.

i knew the instance i heard u were only getting a 10w charger, that the charger wont be enough.

Guys, the power from the screen, when turned on, draws 8W of power.

Why they didnt include a 20W or so charger is beyond me.

big let down to be honest

Add the GPS and LTE, and your car charger will not be able to keep up with it either.

Will see how mine goes, have not really used it in anger. So far very happy.

Haters will hate, Fanboys will Apologies... the way of MR and New Apple products. On rare occurances, either party might actually own the product in question!

Apple by no means are Angels, but they do have a certain arrogance about themselves and thier products as being better then the rest of the industry, hence this scrutiny! With great arrogance and shiny products come responsibility for perfection he he he.

Yep just today I was playing game at full brightness with the iPad pluged into the charger, it was at 87% when I started, and now it's at 85%.

EDIT: And yes it got hot, but I don't see the heat being an issue AT ALL! It's made of aluminum, Its like a giant heatsink.

free new chargers for everyone! #sarcasm

Perhaps the iPad should have shipped with a more powerful charger. I wouldn't be surprised if they make a quiet update next time around, or if this does get some press, even sooner.

Although I've resisted the "this wouldn't have happened under Steve Jobs" expression so far, it is this sort of thing that occasionally he caught at the last minute, leading to supply delays.

Hitch a trailer full of bricks to a Ferrari, mash the pedal to the floor and keep it there and it will heat up too.

I knew there was an explanation.

I'm so glad I've learned to wait a short while on all new Apple releases.

Looking forward to upgrading to the new iPad in a few months after they work the bugs out.

Seriously? The worst things about Apple products are these incessant circlejerks of crap every time a new one releases.

It's only been out for 4 days - well within the 14 dictated by Apple's return policy. If your iPad gets too hot for you, return it. If it doesn't charge well enough for you, return it. Otherwise, just use it and enjoy it.

Simple as that.

When I hug my new ipad so very very hard ...

it tends to drop calls,

... but it's oh so warm!

Scott
ps: why don't we pre-emptively start whining about the new iphone! I'll
start: WHAT KIND OF NAME IS "NEW IPHONE" ... ok, your turn.

It wouldn't surprise me if Apple starts offering new, more powerful chargers to owners of the new iPad. With future shipments containing the new chargers in the box.

I seriously think this will happen. Because aside from the fact that it won't charge under heavy use, it takes double the time to charge it than the iPad 2 did.

Don't bother. Nothing will change because it isn't really a big issue. Your iPhone 4s does the same thing while running a graphic intense game and charging. People need to relax and quit being drama queens.

I'd be curious to know how many people use their iPad to play Infinity Blade II. I've not come across any of these issues but then I'm not using my iPad as a gaming device. My guess is the majority of iPad owners won't encounter these issues but the media will still report it as if everyone is, like they did with iPhone 4.

I noticed the charging problem. I'm going to call Ape and see what they say. I plugged my iPad into my computer during initial setup / syncing and noticed I actually lost 2% power in that hour.

If this is the case, I'll be returning mine!

I always charge my iPad via MacBook Pro USB port and it works fine with my new iPad as well.

pure guess but it's a 42 watt hour battery so if we say the charger is 80% efficient it would take ~52 watts to charge it.

so you would have to charge it 19 time to use 1kW which is about 25p in the UK.

so it would cost 25p for 19 charges, that doesn't sound right so someone else should probably do the calculations.

edit: no it sounds about right, it's a 10W charger and takes about 6-7 hours to charge that's 60-70 watts used so that's at worst 14 charges per kW, so 14 charges for 25p.

There is some power dissipated as heat as well. But that is probably outside of a 95% confidence interval.

"Reports' note that their new iPad didn't charge at all when the game was running"

Now this is "exellent" discovery! It's like saying.... a cup does not fill when you are drinking from it and filling it up at the same time. And it does even empty a bit, if your mouth and your throat are big and thirsty.

What a pile of crap!!

I love seeing these sort of "hater" efforts. Apple has devices with some of the best battery life in the industry. So what if it doesn't charge as well under high load? (I love how they use Infinity Blade II to test it) When I used Android phones the battery would drain while charging from just playing a video!
I had an HTC Aria and I didn't even have to use it for the battery to drain. After a couple hours it was dead whether I used it or it was in sleep mode.

You know that's the same operating temperature range as the Macbook Pro right?

http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/specs.html

But the intended function of the iPad and Macbook Pro is a little different. I can't say why I'd want to take my Macbook Pro outside with me on a hot day since I don't like to work outside in the heat, and I pretty much only use my Macbook Pro for work. However, I can see where I'd want to be out on the deck, watching the kids play in the pool with an iPad.

give me a break

Yeah, this ^ is exactly right.

How dare you actually try to use the piece of consumer electronics you paid handsomely for!

"The New iPad" isn't meant to be used. It is meant to be put on a shelf and marvelled at right next to that Steve Jobs biography you never read.

The sort of people who want to rake Apple over the coals for this are the same sort who go to a restaurant just for the joy of sending food back and humiliating the waiter.

I worked at a place once where we had a regular couple who came in just for this purpose.

They ordered the "10 once sirloin" special and when it arrived they decided to complain loudly that there was no way it was 10 ounces.

Little did they know that the owner of the place had cut and cooked their steak. Laurie was back out at their table in a jiffy. With their steak and a food scale. He slapped the meat down on the scale and it still weighed 11 ounces AFTER cooking.

These repugnant people got up and left without a word. But weeks later when they regained the strength to return, they were much nicer to the staff.

Maybe someone should do a test that shows that most people lose 10 IQ points when they read CR because they put their brains in Neutral and let these "experts" think for them. Or maybe a startling EXPOSE of the thousands of people who have suffered debilitating paper cuts from the cheap paper they publish on?

And again, people can just buy a Touchpad or Playbook. Since nothing ever runs on those, they won't heat up or require charging.

watching the kids play in the pool with an iPad.

That isn't going to work well. And DEFINITELY don't let them try to charge it in there.

Sounds perfect. I have to get one before fall 2012, to warm my hands while saving on the heating bills as oil and electricity skyrocket.
