I ordered a Smart Cover in anticipation of buying the new iPad, but now I might just get the iPad 2. I'll wait for a while to see if Apple decides to do something about it.

I'm not concerned with the heat. It's the battery that seems to be annoying.

I also appreciate the "old timers" at CR that objectively and independently tests all of these devices. I've been buying Apple for 20 years and I hope I never become a fanatic.

Listen to what others are saying on this thread. iPad 2 DOES the same thing when you play CPU/GPU intensive games!

Yes I posted this days ago in the iPad forum.

It will not charge under a heavy load.

The 10W charger is just not powerful enough. The Air uses a charger that is 4 times larger for a battery of near equal size.

hmm, seems to me that common sense would say that if you are using the iPad especially in a processor intensive way all the electricity would be going to running the iPad, not recharging the battery. so yeah, it wouldn't be charging. And depending on exactly what you are doing it might be pulling power from the charger and the battery at the same time

You know what?

This is why they should use FireWire!!! I mean, it's not used by a lot of people, but I wish it was the main standard. USB is garbage, and you can't rely on it to charge something that's almost a PC (as well as transfer data).

One day, USB 2.0 will fail to deliver the performance required for modern computers. Internet bandwidth is becoming more scarce as more people use it, while flash memory is becoming cheaper rapidly, so the cloud will really only be used for small data (especially on cellular data). Eventually, USB 2.0 will not be fast enough to transfer the data to the devices. Companies will hopefully go to FireWire/LightPeak. The whole reason they use USB 2.0 is because it is just so common.

For people to switch to bigger storage capacities, you just need to produce bigger flash memory. For people to get more bandwidth, the whole backbones of the networks must be rebuilt. If they upgrade it, even newer technology will not be applied until much later. Companies cannot afford to keep using slow USB.

Really? CR saying it can't charge under heavy loads is a non-issue to you?

If they follow their typical technique they tested one unit under a heavy load that might be atypical of the average user and claim those results are the same for all units and all uses.

And then they hype it up to make it sound like it is a huge design defect etc etc

I know a couple dozen folks that are on their iPads all the time that got the new one on Friday and none of them had any kind of extreme heat or any issues with the battery draining on or off the charger. I myself was on mine at work friday afternoon, about 12 hours on Saturday, 6 on Sunday and about 14 hours yesterday. It wasn't constant every second but there were stretches of lengthy video playback, push was on for 3 separate email accounts and other than Friday I was on LTE because we were in the desert with no wifi truck. the only time my iPad got anything close to hot was friday when I was downloading my iCloud backup, syncing etc (a total of about 45 GB of data and apps) and wasn't really that hot, certainly not scorching. Even being outside, in the sun for 4-6 hours at a time it never once gave me a temp warning

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9B176 Safari/7534.48.3)

I noticed the charging problem. I'm going to call Ape and see what they say. I plugged my iPad into my computer during initial setup / syncing and noticed I actually lost 2% power in that hour.

If this is the case, I'll be returning mine!

I didn't have this issue. I had mine plugged into my iMac last night, and it fully charged in a couple of hours. Obviously, it will take longer than if plugged into the wall.

The original iPod had FireWire and it was glorious!

Ok, well that's what they do and its clearly stated in their reviews and methodology. If all you're looking for is the best stuff, they give you that information as well, its just not in their simplistic rankings. Rather odd attitude you have here.

It's a rather odd idea that CR has. Someone there has a grudge. What, Infinity Blade II will mean you can't play it while charging to 100%? Is everybody insane? In what world is this a problem. If you're enough of a game addict that you want the gameplay at the same time as afull charge from 20% or so, I think you want the Atomic Model. It's water-cooled, and as long as the chamber doesn't rupture, you get almost no exposure to radioactivity. And you just have to pay Tom Swift 25 cents for it!

I've been using my new iPad a lot since it arrived on friday and it barely even gets warm, certainly no more so than my iPhone. Really impressed with the battery life as well. Not a heavy gamer so maybe that is why I have not experienced any issues. So far, so good.:D

Please do. Apple's engineers love to get their hands on possibly defective units in the few weeks after a launch. They actually have the store managers take back any unit that 'is broken' for any reason and send it to a special center rather than the typical return for refurbishing house. Just so they can test them, break them down etc. See if there really is an issue or just customer expectation issues

Here is the only scenario where the whole issue would be relevant:
A) You're unemployed.
B) You're homeless and thus can't have the iPad plugged in while playing.
C) You don't sleep. Ever.
D) You're playing Infinity Blade 24/7.

But that would lead to
E) You're unemployed, homeless and can't afford an iPad in the first place.
Wouldn't it?

Still, a charger that can power the iPad under full load while charging the battery would be great.

My iPad only gets slightly warm not hot and it does charge when playing games . I don't see what the big fuss is mine is perfect

So, if you play Infinity Blade II plugged in, the battery will still drain, but does it still take in power do it does not drain as fast as unplugged?

Now there is a test for ya. Take two iPad 3s, same model bought at the same time at the same store. turn off all location services, push, LTE etc. Set the brightness at the same level and so on. Basically identical machines with nothing else running of any kind.

Charge both of them fully then take one off the charger. Start playing a nice high load game like Infinity Blade or that new hyped up fighting game. whatever so long as the load is heavy and they are both playing the same game.

see which one dies first and by what amount of time

113/116 is way too hot... Most people here made fun of the other people that posted about it.... I think some here could have an ice cream stuck up their butt and say oh it's not cold as long as it had apple on it....

I love apple products, but facts are facts.... That is way too Hot

I too appreciate people that objectively and independently test all of the devices. While I am a fan of apple products, I understand your comment. Denial won't fix anything. Although, I must admit that Apple has done a good job fixing problems that I have had with the iphone 4s. The update helped my echo sound that I used to hear as well as my battery is now lasting close to what my iphone 3gs used to last. Maybe if enough people discuss this issue, it will be something that gets worked on. I do not currently own a new ipad, but I am one of those consumers that looks at various sources to see what sort of problems people are experiencing and what a company does to try and fix those problems before I purchase it.

Whenever I know I'm going to tax the battery, I want to be plugged in just for peace of mind. When an outlet is available, I'm always plugged in.

You are kidding right?

Not trying to invoke the name of Jobs as an extreme, but I really don't think he would've tolerated all the compromises of this iPad. The larger thickness, the heat, the charging, all very "non-Apple".

Always amusing when someone signs up just to make such an inane comment.

You do realize that work on this iPad would have started a good year ago, maybe more. Which was when Jobs was still alive and still essentially in charge even when he wasn't present. Meaning that all of this is very "Jobs" and very "Apple" as will be pretty much every product they release for another 3-5 years (yeah tech moves that slowly)

Did you even read the first post.... they only played for 45 min..Not 24/7....

Just FYI you should never run say your laptop with out its battery in their because under max power demand it can often times need more power than just the external power can provide so it pulls the remaining power from the battery.
That's some pretty bad power supply in your laptop, then. I mean, I can plug a MacPro into the same outlet and don't need a battery. Or a fridge.
