Consumer Reports, the prominent ratings and reviews magazine, is still declining to recommend the iPhone 4 following Apple's offer of free cases for all iPhone 4 customers through September 30th.
Consumer Reports believes Apple's offer of free cases is a good first step. However, Apple has indicated that this is not a long-term solution, it has guaranteed the offer only through September 30th, and has not extended it unequivocally to customers who bought cases from third-party vendors. We look forward to a long-term fix from Apple. As things currently stand, the iPhone 4 is still not one of our Recommended models.
The magazine touched off a firestorm in the mainstream media earlier this week by not recommending Apple's iPhone 4 due to antenna issues despite the device topping its rankings of smartphones. The uproar lead to today's press conference at Apple's headquarters where the company addressed the antenna issues and made its offer of free cases for users.

Good for Consumer Reports. The bumper is nothing but a band-aid. I don't/didn't need a bumper or a case for my 3GS, 3G, 2G. Why for the iPhone 4?

It's probably the fairest negative critique Apple will ever receive for their products, but I think that that's what makes it the sharpest jab of all.

Meh... iPhone 4 still going to fly off the shelves. Consumer Reports is doing nothing but harming their own reputation.

it's fantastic for someone to stand up to Apple for once to actually point out flaws.

Too often when reviewers be smitten by the design of Apple products and forgot what is really important sometimes.

GOOD FOR YOU! Consumer Report,

Oh snap...

The funny thing here is that Apple many times would use what CR had to say in some of its literature and training materials. Telling Specialists to quote this and that. I'm guessing this will NOT be included in future materials...

Big deal, I don't recommend reading Consumer Reports because the reviews may be unbalanced. That's certainly not going to stop people from reading Consumer Reports. If you dont like the iPhone 4, return it and buy something else.

Yeah I wonder why they chose Sep 30? Why not until a permanent solution is made available? If iP4 owners are going to be stuck with this flaw they should extend that bumper deadline to when the next iphone comes out.

Who care????

Yo NO he tenido ningún problema con mi iPhone 4, es un producto increíble!!!!! ahora si que entre menos burros mas elotes!!!!

Keep up the pressure CR! Take the fight to these thieves! All the cell phones I've ever used works fine when holding them in my left hand except the iPhone 4.

I love how all the Apple fanboys are coming out and saying that Consumer Reports sucks, etc., when before this Consumer Reports was used to recommend the iPhone

I've not bothered to read their iPhone4 content, as it seems that they're simply grandstanding for web hits.

But I ALWAYS enjoy laughing at their HDTV reviews.

The case is a horrible fix. I have an invisible shield on my iPhone4 and don't want anything more. Hardware must be changed. Obviously Apple has something planned for after September 30th (minor hardware change to insulate the sides), so this is intended as a temporary fix, but why bother if its such a crap fix. And really... not offering refunds to people who purchased third-party cases? SJ just bit***d about Gizmodo during the Q/A, lame. Heh, funny that it didn't solve much between Consumer Reports and Apple though. Interesting to see the next step.

I can not recommend Consumer Reports due to their flawed and inadequate testing methodologies when it comes to iPhone 4.

omg iPhone 4 is the most amazing thing ever how could anyone say anything bad about it especially after Steve Jobs himself held a press conference today to even give out free bumpers for every1 :confused::confused::confused::confused::apple:

Does the Invisible Shield cover the antenna? if it odes, do you still reproduce an issue? If so, it's not the f'n hardware.

As for Consumer Reports? Whoop-de-do. They shouldn't score it as their best smartphone.

Yay good for them. Someone who doesn't bend over for Steve. It's a good phone, but this is something that requires a fix.

it should be not recommended to people that hold the phone with their left hands and cannot afford tape to resolve the issue.

To the 6% of the lefties out there, buy the phone before sept 30th.

the antennagate issue doesn't affect me and i'm happy with the phone, and that's what matters.
