contact list order?

to start off, my contacts on my previous phone showed up like this:
John D
now on my iPhone, they show up like this:
D, John

Is there a way i can change the contact list, so that it is alphabetized by first name?

Yup.

Settings
->Mail, Contacts, Calenders

Then scroll down, you'll see a little section for Contacts where you can change Sort Order and Display Order.
